    Haania Orlovi adult habitat

Thanks!  This tank has been established for a few months, and the mug of springtail culture should have the moss well populated by the time I need to move the Haania in.  Humidity is 80 to 100%, and temp is 75-85 F.  The rest is luck!

    Water for molting

Awesome, I had seen some debate about it, and I wanted to figure it out.  :D

    Water for molting

Hi Everyone,  I live in Phoenix, where the humidity averages 23 to 47%.  It can be 15% in the summer.  So, I keep my bugs in vivariums, I use humidity gauges, and I pay attention to this stuff.  I'm also a biochemist.  I can pick my way through etymology journals, and I've been researching the...

    Mantis not molting in time

According to my reading in journals, an insect won't molt until it reaches a trigger weight.  In your first photo, your mantis looks very hungry.  I'm sure eating house flies will make a big difference.  Let him eat all he wants, and hopefully he'll molt.

    Haania Orlovi adult habitat

Hi Everyone,  At what age can Haania start taking melanogaster? Once my Haania are old enough to see easily, or maybe once they can eat melanogaster, I plan to move them into this mossy cliffs vivarium.  It has live moss, fake trees, and on the lower left a mug producing springtails.  If I'm...

    Hoonia Orlovi hatching habitat

Hi Everyone,  For Christmas I'm getting a Haania Orlovi ooth.  They are tiny moss mantises who eat springtails for their first several instars.   I got a 32oz container, filled the bottom with charcoal and water, and added springtails and rice.  I used twigs to make an airspace above that, and...

    humidity for ootheca trouble

Coconut fiber is too open to hold the moisture, I think.  I use Eco-earth (which is also coconut, ground up onto soil) and it holds a lot more water.   I put 1-2 inches in the container and I spray it whenever the top starts getting lighter brown.  My humidity is stable for a few days at at...

    WTB adult male Gemmatus

Hi all,  I need an adult male Gemmatus for my adult female Creobroter gemmatus (Indian Flower Mantis).   I would prefer to buy.  I'm in Phoenix, so the weather is awesome here.   Thanks! Daphne

    New addition!

It sounds like Kevin has had problems in the past, but he has recently hired a shipping person, and I have not had any problems with him this year.

    Climbing materials for mantids

I'm lining some of my tanks with coconut fiber liner used for planters and for vivarium backgrounds.  It is made of coconut fibers glued together with a smidge of latex.  I have it in the hot humid tank I will be using for Devil's Flower nymphs, and there has been no mold at all.  It also works...

    Vulture Culture

I seem to be collecting molt skins from my Mantids.  I love seeing the huge size changes from molt to molt.    Here is one resource I know of:  http://deadinsects.net/ I found what I think was an occipital bone from a giant sea turtle, on the beach.  I tried to sun-clean it to keep as a...

Mosquitoes.   Among pet insects, I'm not happy about Madascar hissing roaches.  I like almost everything else from Madagascar...
