    Housing for Chinese Mantids

Nice--The only thing I can catch outside are some of the hundreds of crickets in my neighborhood.

    Housing for Chinese Mantids

My guys are a few inches long now. I kept all of them in a net cage until they moved up to cricket feeding. Since the above post, I've discovered that I may have made a newbie error. Looks like I have 4 females and one possible male. It's up under a leaf and hanging the wrong way, so I'm not...

    Housing for Chinese Mantids

First let me thank you all for the posts/comments that have helped me get this far. Thru trial and error (and the advice on this board), only one of the 5 I set out to keep has died--still not sure why. So---thanks again. My question is whether or not there are reasons not to use kritter...

    Question on Chinese mantids

I have to admit that I have been neglecting my 'reading' so not sure what L my chinese are at the moment. I had to help one molt yesterday, it was struggling to get out and fell off the leaf. I ended up picking it up with some tweezers and holding upside down while it finished emerging--its...

    Question on Chinese mantids

Ha! That must have happened in my garden! I only found one or two dead ones in the cage.

    Question on Chinese mantids

I have seen many comments that it is harder to raise Chinese mantids and I wonder why? I originally got mine for my grandson via a kit on Amazon. My daughter freaked out so he just gets 'visitation' rights when he's over, but I'm in love with them. Many hatched and a lot were put into my...

    Nymph Feeding Help

A couple of weeks later, a LOT of them were still alive so I ended up placing about 20 around my garden. My Vermicomposter produces many fruitflies so I moved it close to my plants. Much to my surprise, the ladybugs, wasps (not sure what kind, but non-aggressive) and mantids seem to be getting...

    My Nymphs are thieves

Mantis Noob here,, but I have noticed that my nymphs will spy a more industrial sibling catching fruitflies then sneak over and totally jack them for their food. Its funny to watch, but is that normal?

    Any Books/Pamplets Recommended

As stated in a previous post, I purchased a mantis kit for my grandson, but when they hatched today, my daughter brought them to my house, but my grandson gets visitation. (Not sure what she was expecting....but apparently not that). Anyway, I am hooked and even if my grandson loses interest...

    Nymph Feeding Help

I purchased a Mantis Kit for my grandson and when they hatched, bought fruit flies from Petco. Doesn't look like the babies are interested in eating them and a couple have died. Do they eat at night or should I be able to see some type of aggresive action? I know that I'm a novice compared to...
