    My new Carnivorous plants!

Gadzooks no. Regular potting soil will kill them....too many chemicals. These guys do best in pete moss (Not Miracle grow - that has fertilizer) and perlite (again, not miracle grow) or LFS (long fibered sphagnum). Also, when watering, use rain water, distilled water or reverse osmosis...

Eastern Cicada Killers in Riverside Park

I have these nesting in my yard - I just tell the girls to watch, but don't touch! I caught one once in a net, and put it in a mason jar to show them. When it tried to fly, it created a dog gone TORNADO in the jar! Man, those things are strong. Needless to say, I loosened the top by hand...

    My new pet

Huh - I never knew katydids were predatory. I always thought they ate leaves.... Learn something new every day! We have a species around here (NY) - not nearly that big...more like a 1" body with 2" wings or so....still bulky, but they fly pretty well. I wonder if mine are also...

    The Black Death?

I thought consumption was tuberculosis? Anyway, the black death, if associate with a blocked intestinal tract, may be (and sorry for this one)...... overconsumption! Thank you, thank you...I'll be here all week - try the veal!

    Idolomantis diabolica

Well, I had the idea of having lots of sticks in there, too....I've read that Idolo's need lots of sticks. That would (theoretically) solve the problem, as it would present multiple points where they could climb back up. I guess you're right, though. Just won't know til I try!

So... what does 110,000 maggots look like?

My thoughts exactly! How many mantids do you HAVE, for goodness sakes?!?

looks like a female D. bolivari to me, but maybe those wings are too long?

    Idolomantis diabolica

I have this theory - an armchair one at that (read: haven't actually raised this species yet....coming in the mail now!) that the best bet would be to use an enclosure with walls they CANNOT climb and a lid they CANNOT hang from . This would ensure that they use the sticks provided within the...

    food needs for Idolomantis diabolica

Hey all, I've read that Idolo's have to be fed on flying insects (i.e. no crickets, meal worms, etc). Is this true? I ask becuase I used to hear the same thing about Gongy's, then later heard that several people use crickets with them... I have a couple Idolo's coming this week...and I'll be...

    Gut loading absolutely mandatory?

HAW HAW HAW HAW HAW! That REALLY tickled me. Man, I read a creat v/s evo board almost every day for the entertainment value - I should have known I needed to look no further than Phil. On topic: I feed my mantids the "porch light special" during the warm months (and during the...

anyone here use these small tents?

LOL at Hibiscusmile. Rick, would the pointy top make much of a difference, since they would probably hang facing downwards anyway? I figured it would direct the food items right to the mantis....though this may lead to bugs that are fat and out of shape. We can't have that, now, can...

Hi everyone, I have a few ooths of purple boxers (thanks Brian!). I had one nypmh hatch out a few days ago, and figured it was a semi-dud ooth....but now I've had another lone nymph hatch.... Is this par for the course with boxers? One at a time? Man, these guys are TINY! :D Update...

    Gas station mantis

Hey Laura, I didn't take a pic - but I guess I didn't need to. Spitting image of Ghostie's. They're really neat - great wing detail, and the arm spots are cool.
