    Stupid Mantids? Stupid Owner?

Liquor. Used to work for me in college..... ;) Joking asside, do you have them hot enought? I've read that Gongy's won't mate unless it's at least 100 degrees. I'm not sure it's true, as I haven't raised them, but I've read that in more than one place.

    Random stupid food question

Hey Phil, you are a font of entomological wisdom and knowledge...so you obviously have a stake in this...so get on it, man!  :detective:

    Longest lived mantid?

I'm reasonably sure he was teasing you, Joe. You talk about your mantids on a first-name basis - and no one reading this has the slightest idea what you're talking about (if they haven't read your matis update thread).

    Random stupid food question

Interesting....so it seems that it's more of an inherrited suspetablity to having the wings dammaged rather than an actual inherrited wing trait. Well, that may very well be true....but breeders of DOGS have bred all different breeds....though that's not a fair comparisson as flies have not been...

    Random stupid food question

Hey Guys & Gals, I'm sitting here at work, and the oddest notion came to me, for no good reason. Has anyone yet bred flightless house/bluebottle/greenbottle flies? You know, like the flightless fruit flies you can get in the pet store? I guess they would be called housewalks, then...not...

Hey Krissen, Had your macrops molted out of his/her deformity? I sure hope it made it!

    Nepenthes (my first love)

Stunning plants! Great pics! Really like the trunc x max. I have a x'Marbled Dragon,' which I beleive is another trun max cross. The darn thing is rediculous. Where did you get your raf 99? Sweet plant. I have a generic raf, but my lowland conditions aren't optimal...a little on the dry...

    7th annual NASC benefit auction

Hello Mantid folks, Please check out this auction! There is always cools stuff up for sale (watch out for the "mystery dew" that a member named Ozzy will most likely post - this is a known joke on the forum, so just be aware - it's actually a can of Mountain Dew, LOL). If you are feeling...

    7th annual NASC benefit auction

Posted with permission (also in the off topic forum). It's almost time for 7th annual online NASC Benefit Auction to start. All of us at NASC are proud to announce that a portion of the auction proceeds (the lesser of $1500 or 50%) will be going to a 5 acre site in Georgia managed by The...

    non canibal mantis

I am currently having very good luck with Ghosts. Limbata - not so much. They will eat ANYTHING that moves. I genearlly find (in my Oh-so-vast experience) mantids that prefer smaller prey are less prone to canibalism. My ghosts certainly fall in that category. They'll take on larger stuff...

    mantis vs ants

Phil, you have a gift for entertaining text! I'm interested in the one shot, one kill thing.... Most of the time, when see mantids strike, it doesn't kill the victim. That's usually accomplished by the gnawing. Having your head eaten certainly WILL kill you. But the mantis must...

scared the &%$!@ out of me!

Do apparantly E. Macrops are trickters. They think they're VERRRRRY funny. I found one of the little stinkers lying on the bottom of his cage, curled up, legs all bent.... Man, I thought, that SUCKS! I really like these guys, and one drops dead on me. When I reached in to pick it...

    non enclosure mantis

While there are never any guarantees with bugs, I had success with an adult ghost and and adult dead leaf (lobata) on hanging plants outside. Now, granted, these were both females, and neither ever flew that I could tell, and I don't think, at their sizes, they could easily navigate the way up...

Woo hoo! New babies arrived today

Well, it's been what, two weeks now? Almost.... Everyone is still doing fine - some of them are starting to look a little "fat" (fat being relative with thise stick mimmics). They seem to like mosquitoes....which is FINE with me. But I am NOT going to guy-load 'em! No sir! Also...

Woo hoo! New babies arrived today

Yeah, I'm still stoked. They came as l2 or l3, but even at such a young age, they're almost an inch. I love it when they lay low against the stick and just pretend to be part of it. Makes it hard to find them, though. They do seem "inquisitive." That may be giving them more intellectual...
