How does the Instar rank work?

My other mantids seem "fine" but I'll have to see how they do. I have an ooth that I'm expecting to hatch soon and I am setting up 2 more enclosures in different ways to see how they do. I'm in an experimental stage right now with mantids. I just started keeping them so to have 3 out of 5 still...

How does the Instar rank work?

So with the Instar "rank" of each mantid does it depend on what species it is for how many time it will moult? How do I know when mine has reached sub-adult to adult? I know very obvious signs like the wings and such but how will I know when they are full grown?

    Sand or Soil?

I would be keeping several mantid that are native to North America (Chinese, Carolina, or European. I can't tell the difference) How would the species make a difference and why if it matters?

    Can I hand train mantid?

I heard from someone that I could hand train my mantids. Nothing special just to get them to eat from and hang out on my hand or shoulder. I have had them climbing around on me but they seem to like to explore. Is there any way to do this or am I foolish for thinking I can train a mantid?

    What do crickets eat?

I put a few small crickets in with my mantids to see if they would eat them. They ate the smaller of the few and the ones they didn't have moulted a few times and are still alive. I've noticed they chew on a leaves a bit but I don't believe they've consumed enough of they little foliage I have...

    What's good?

My mantids are getting bigger, they are now in the 4th instar and consume dozens of fruit flies every couple days. I would prefer not to feed them crickets and was wondering what a good and easy cultured feeder is for them?

    Sand or Soil?

I'm setting up a new enclosure, aside from a base layer of small gravel would sand or soil make for better living conditions? I have carolina mantids if that makes a difference. Thanks

How much space do they need?

I have four mantids in a 10 gal. tank and I plan on seperating them once they get a little bigger. What would you suggest for one or two mantids to co-exsist together? What would be to big what would be to small? Should I house them individually or is a pair of male/ female OK?

    Suitable for mantids

Also where can I get a different species of mantid that is reliable? I am told by the "pet stores" that I go to that they are only allowed to sell those native to North America (being the carolina, europian, and chinese mantids which to my understanding have little difference). I see a couple...

    Suitable for mantids

What would be a less canabalistic* species? I had my heart set on getting ghost mantids but I don't know if they are similar to the ones I have. Do you think a few ghost mantids would be ok together? If not what would the ideal species be for living together?

    Suitable for mantids

Thanks. The "trimmed twigs" are more or less branches without the foliage, I believe I have plenty. The heat lamp is for when it drops below 60 degrees. I read that they get sluggish if it gets to cold and they are being kept in a basement. Thanks again for the info

    Suitable for mantids

The set up I have for my newly aquired mantids is a 10 gallon fish tank. I put small gravel at the bottom below about 4in if soil. In the corner I have a dish filled with rocks to stablize 4 bamboo stalks and not allow any standing water when they are watered (level with soil). I also have a...
