    Carolina mantis eggs question

Hi! I've got three Carolina oothecas. Currently they're outside on my porch in a butterfly enclosure because they're native here, so I've let them be in their natural temperature, etc.  I'm going out of town in a couple weeks for ten days. I'm very concerned they might hatch while I'm gone. I...

    Stagmomantis carolina ootheca

My Carolina girl, Jade, laid her first ooth yesterday!  We were super lucky in that a male Carolina actually came to our house to mate with her.  I've been searching and searching for one to no avail, and last Wednesday lo and behold a male flies near her enclosure!  Amazing!  4 days later Jade...

2 Questions - Feeding adult mantis & outdoor housing question

Thank you for the input!  Great news!  After watching her for about four hours (maybe more but I'm scared to admit how long...lol) yesterday, I was able to witness her final molt!  What an experience, to see the process firsthand, especially the final one.  She did great.  I felt like I was...

2 Questions - Feeding adult mantis & outdoor housing question

Jade is a Carolina mantis.  I think she may be getting ready to do her final molt.  She's my first ever, and I'm totally head over heels for her.   - Typically I feed her flies that I catch on my screened porch.  That has been fine for now, but the flies seem to be a little harder to come by...

    Grasshopper question...

Thank you!  I was starting to get nervous about leaving it. Someone on Facebook said the grasshopper will harm Jade, but I doubted that because I have read that they often eat them and most advice says to remove crickets if they don't eat them. I can sleep tonight. Lol

    Grasshopper question...

I don't know what stage my Carolina is, but she's decent sized now. I've put a grasshopper in her enclosure for the first time ever. It's been quite the challenge for Jade. It's been a few hours and she still hasn't been able to catch it and keep it from getting away. Should I remove it from her...

Eyes darker in a 12-hour period?

I haven't read the links yet but will but gosh!  So cool. Ha!  I've never studied the behavior and ways of an insect before and never knew any insect could have anything like that happen like the darker eyes in poor light, etc, thing. That's a really neat fact!  And now of course my brain is...

Eyes darker in a 12-hour period?

Is it from eating?  She had two flies today. The second she didn't finish. It was the most she's eaten since I've had her, about a week and a half. Jade is her name, a Carolina mantis. Thoughts on the eyes? I have to admit it kind of creeps me out a bit!

    Spittle bugs okay as prey?

The Entomology group on Facebook is a huge help with identifying all kinds of bugs. I had wondered what those spittle bugs were called for several years and finally asked.  My Carolina ate her first decent sized fly today and handled it really well. I have no idea what kind of fly it was...

    Spittle bugs okay as prey?

Thank you again!  If leafhoppers are okay, would you say that planthoppers are as well?  I'm not sure they're in the same family.

    Spittle bugs okay as prey?

We have plenty of two lined spittle bugs here. Are these okay for mantids?  I've got a Carolina if that matters. Thank you!

    Traveling with mantids?

Awesome information!  I'm still on the fence about bringing her in this two night trip. I usually set the room to not have the maids come in and clean at the hotel anyway since it's such a short stay. If you think 70 degrees F wouldn't be bad for her, I'd consider bringing her because I hate to...

Humidity levels/spraying enclosure with water questions

@CosbyArt - I'm totally a mess with my bug identifying hobby now, so I love more information than the average, most likely. You'll never believe (but you will, but I almost couldn't believe it!) what I just woke up to! I brought her in last night because it was kind of windy outside and also the...

Humidity levels/spraying enclosure with water questions

I can't even express how grateful I am for all this information!!  I have come up with my own guesses as to why we have certain guidelines for size of the enclosure and everything, but I didn't fully understand the process, which now you've completely explained and I can visualize it and...

Feeding and/or handling if possibly molting soon?

I'm full of questions. My Carolina girl was possibly uninterested in food yesterday. Today she's moved around some and though her abdomen appears to have some white on it, I have no clue if she's getting ready to molt or not.  - she's upside down on the lid. Should I attempt to feed her, which...

    Diet of mainly moths?

Thank you!  We actually have the Dollar tree nets!   Are there any insects I should without a doubt avoid?  I think that's my hesitation, is the fly I gave her the other day gave her a run for her money - I think it was too strong (wing power) or at least it appeared to be. I eventually let it...

Humidity levels/spraying enclosure with water questions

Thank you both so much for your help!  I saw somewhere where someone glued flowers to the lid and claimed it helped avoid mismolts. Not really fully understanding the benefits to that, that's what I did. And there's essentially a vertical stick in there as well, so hopefully she'll be okay. I've...

    Traveling with mantids?

Wow!  The hotel tip definitely is valuable. And that will carry into other public environments, for instance, the school I may visit, it could be that they spray in the room. I don't know if they do but like you said, it might be a good idea to ask questions beforehand to be sure, and take...

    Traveling with mantids?

Wonderfully helpful information!  Thank you. I plan to read the information you linked to and educate myself as much as possible. The internet has limited information, I think, and I think I saw a book recommended somewhere that I'll be looking into. I actually brought her inside for the evening...
