I have been meaning to try the maggots over pupae for longer "shelf life" but I hear they can be pretty nasty smelling. Just how bad do they smell?

They are a very hardy species, I have about 40 of them myself. At the very beginning they won't eat all of the melanos but that won't last long, soon you will be hard pressed to find any scraps.

I was told a few years ago to use very little to no active yeast in Hydei cultures and have had better luck than using the same amount I would put in a mel culture. It probably has to do with the longer life cycle of the Hydei and the media breaking down too soon when you add the yeast.
