    HIERODULA Grandis eyes problems

Thanks. Are the glass terrariums larger? I think it is quite small for 6-7cm mantis, especially for slim adult ones (but may do well for larvae, because of their abdonem is turned up). In my opinion, each dimension must be at least 3 mantid's length. Usually black spots appear just one day...

    HIERODULA Grandis eyes problems

What was the size of the terrariums in which mantids' eyes became dark? The plastic ones?

    HIERODULA Grandis eyes problems

Not exactly. I mean that black spots appear not of mechanical rubbing against the cloth, but of stress caused by standing for a long time in close compartment with no way out. Hiding in holes or cracks is typical for cockroaches, but not for mantids. They are creatures of open space, which...

    HIERODULA Grandis eyes problems

I noticed that black spots appear after keeping mantids for some time (about 10 hours) in small containers (around 2 mantid's length), usually when transporting them. I think this is a stress reaction caused by lack of space.

    do mantids urinate?

After drying, it looks like white powder. I never saw mantids doing this for defence.

adult male orchid mantis in flight

Thanks for sharing! I thought they keep their raptorial legs folded when flying, for less aerodynamic resistance.

    Hatched Katydids

Thanks ! What species is it ? Some of Mecopoda sp. ? How long was the incubation period ? And why the ovae were aggregated together, looking like an ootheca without foamy covering ? I thought katydids put ovae into the ground separately.

    european mantid

About 10 days, if the temperature is 26-28 Celsius. Also, there must be wet peat (or coco-peat) on the bottom, to make air humid.

    feeding L1 religiosa

I raised M.religiosa L1 on L1 crickets (Acheta domestica, Gryllys assimilis). They also may take Panchlora nivea L1, which are tiny too, but it takes some time to dig them up. I noticed, that M.religiosa have no suckers on their tarsi, so they can't climb on smooth surfaces; if you keep them in...

    Hatching during shipment...grrrr

In ellroy's 1.5 year old thread ('Idolomantis mating success UK!' , http://mantidforum.net/forums/index.php?sh...=3218&st=0) is said, that already after the first mating male died. Is this typical for Idolomantis, or males can mate more than once ?

    UVB lighting

Of course they do! They like sunlight very very much. As for mantids being raised in captivity, each time they have an opportunity to take a sunbath they spread on a surface immediately and stay still for even a few hours with a look of pleasure on their faces :) . Also I noticed, that M...

HELP! Mantid Ootheca hatching, but what!!!

I had about 10 parasitic wasps got out from the wild-caught Hierodula transcaucasica ooth, and after a week or two around 30 nymphs hatched. For Hierodula, that ooth was rather small; I think there were about 50 eggs or even less.

    mantis religosa ooth cold period

In 2006 my friends from zoo told me that M.rel ooths don't need a cold period, so I just put a container on a bookshelf and wait. The ooth being layed in the beginning of september started to hatch on 22 of december. The nymphs had been getting out for next three or four days, about 30-50 each...
