How exactly do you tell the gender of a mantis?

That's great to know about the antenna. I just noticed that today when i was parading my newly adult male around the living room to my girlfriend. His antenna were huge!! She wanted to see how much bigger the female was, so I brought her out and we noticed how much smaller her antenna were...

    Tragedy

So she's acting strange since the molt. She keeps going down to the bottom of the enclosure, so i take her out to feed and water her, and she barely eats? She did drink alot but has only eaten a mealworm and a half since motling last night.

    Tragedy

Also a bummer because she is my only true green mantis that I'm raising right now....she was my favorite.

    Tragedy

So....she molted. Unfortunately she still has that bend in her thorax, although not as pronounced. But more disappointing is that her left raptorial is still completely crippled. As a matter of fact I had to pull the whole skin off of it this morning as it was still stuck inside. I'm going...

    Freshly molted adults.....xxx!

So I have two adults that have literally only been adults for a couple days. The male is mature by a three days over the female. Would it be wise to wait to try and mate them or should I wait a few weeks?

    Final Molt

So the guys are ready as soon as they have wings?? Like if there was a receptive female he'd be on it?

    Final Molt

Thanks. I tried to tease it out with a toothpick but it's basically set already. Oh well. 5 more to go! On a side note, will they still eat as adults or is mating their primary focus now?

    Final Molt

He still a little light in color and kinda flimsy, but it's probably been a good 12hrs or more since he molted.

    Final Molt

So out of my six chinese mantis, the smallest one was the first to molt last night into an adult. It's so impressive looking with those wings! Problem is the top wing on the left didn't unfold. It's just a 1/4 of the way open and the rest is still tucked into a ball. Should I try and unfold...

    Trained

I was just doing it for party tricks....when I tell people I have a trained praying mantis they can hardly believe it.....Typically he eats crickets and flies and anything else I can catch.

    Tragedy

Wing buds are definitely not swollen. They are still flat on her back.

    How?

    Little black flies

Maybe they could've been in the substrate i've recently added to the bottom of the enclosures? Its made from coconut husk.

    Little black flies

Definitely not fruit files. I'll try and get a pic. There are too many of them to have just flown in. And they're in two of the five enclosures.

    Little black flies

I've always fed my mantis crickets (I'm new to this) but recently there have been small flies originating inside my mantis's enclosures? I can't figure out how they got there? They're too big to get inside through the netting...could it be they came out of something I'm feeding them? Could...

    Tragedy

Some updated pics. Although still bent over, she is doing much better. Much move movement and her appetite is ridiculous.
