Sphodromantis sp. blue flash feeding video

So cool! Mouthparts still give me the willies

    Class pet?

You can get a warming pad to go in the bottom of the tank or get a light on a timer for the weekends. I keep it pretty cold in my apartment at night and my blue flash never seemed to mind.

    Bruce died

Robin, that is so kind of you. We just got three baby creos and in our tiny apartment they max us out on enclosure space. They are super cute and keeping us occupied. Thank you :)

    Bruce died

Thanks everyone. We were so excited for him to be a grown up. I'm pretty sure he fell from the top of his enclosure and couldn't get back up. His wings and limbs were twisted. He was our buddy so we are going to burry him by the fence.

    Bruce died

He mismolted his final molt last night. We found him alive but severely mangled this morning and had to freezer him. I'm such a girl that I cried a little and made Ben do it. He was our first and only pet in DC until I got the Creos a few days ago.

    New Creos!!

These little guys are really active! Very curious, I've had them home a few hours getting temporary homes ready and two of them already climbed up a dusty lamp and took a tumble. They jumped right back up and started climbing again. And what's with that funny little butt wiggle? Hehe

    New Creos!!

I just opened the box and was greeted by three very curios Creobroter Pictipennis from Mike. Yay for new species!!

    New Mantids

Ha, I love it when they clean their little feets like that. We call it Bruce's yoga time.

    Was he napping??

Ok, thank you. Bruce is our first mantis and I was worried we broke him.

    Was he napping??

You think? We have been using paper towels lately to keep the crickets from hiding for days on end. He's close to his last molt and I don't want him to die :(

    Was he napping??

This past Sunday my subadult male sphodromantis spent most of the day on the bottom of his enclosure with his abdomen, thorax and head resting on the bottom. His 'chin' was tucked to his 'chest' and he would barely move a leg when touched (lightly). My boyfriend and I were really worried that he...

    Flies all over my house...

I recently got some great crickets from Backwaterreptiles.com, just to give you some options :)

    beginner species of mantids

I am on my first mantis, a sphodromantis, and he is pretty sturdy. We even had a near death experience when the power and heat went off in our apartment for a full day while we were at work. It got down to 50 degrees inside, we flipped the breakers back on and put a few lamps by him and he was...

    First time offering crickets

Success! He has plowed through 3 1/2" crickets and now he's just sitting with one more in his raptors. Once again, thank you for the help. You guys are so helpful :)

    First time offering crickets

Brilliant, thank you all so much! He's our little buddy and I worry. Hehe

    First time offering crickets

Ok. Should I, and I feel bad for saying this, cripple the cricket in some way before I drop it in? Bruce hasn't eaten since the molt and I'm not sure how strong he is and how he would stand up against a cricket right now.

    First time offering crickets

My Sphodromantis, Bruce, molted to L6 a few days ago and is just too big for the flies now. I am offering him crickets for the first time tomorrow, any advice on how to approach it? He has only had flightless flies in the past and I don't want him to get hurt by a feisty cricket. Any advice...

    Mantis molting really fast

He is currently staring at a jar of honey. Vain little man. As long as it's not a sign that I'm doing something wrong then I'm more than happy for him to grow like a weed. And we try not to let him watch anything too violent or sexual. He is very young and impressionable.
