    Disastrous discovery this evening

That's a major bummer. :( Hopefully he did his deed with at least one and you get plentiful ooths. It would certainly be better to start with four gravid ladies, but all is not lost.

    Misting water?

+1. The limestone may not specifically cause harm to befall your mantids, but tap water has a lot of junk in it (especially fluoride) that mantids don't need. Distilled water is junk-free, so the risk that something in the water might affect your mantids drops to zero.

ok, bored and can't help myself!

My first thought for 'What makes a Ghost go Green?' was exactly what the topic was, but I also got an image in my head of casper recycling some aluminum cans.

    Weird food from your homeplace/country

Mmmm, long pig. Rocky Mountain Oysters are the only strange thing I can think of in regards to Denver. I've never had them, and kind of boring when it comes to the foods I'm willing to eat. The strangest I've ever had would be shark, and that's hardly strange at all.

    It's Snowing....

Cry me a river. <_< If I never saw snow again, it would be too soon.

    Off wit' 'is 'ed!

That's some quick-thinking! My condolences for the fallen fellow, but it is quite fortunate you were able to get a mating out of it at least.

    It's Snowing....

Here in Denver it started snowing yesterday and didn't let up until early this morning or so. Not a huge amount, at least not compared to how it can be here, but enough to make everything miserable. And nothing closed from the weather, but that's not surprising. The last time anything closed...

My first of MANY to come :)

There's some variation from species to species, but the easiest way is number of segments on the abdomen. Here's a handy-dandy guide: http://mantidforum.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=7110

    What is your favorite cheese?

My wife is lactose-intolerant, so cheese is usually not on the menu. I'm also not terribly fond of the stuff (I can't eat straight cheese, it grosses me out to try), so I can't say it's that great a loss. That said, my favorite cheese is provolone.

    What's your favourite band? (music)

    Everclear, which is post-grunge alt-rock.

humans eat 3 meals a day, what about mantids?

Ah, but I was answering the question hinted at in the thread's title "how often do mantids eat?" as opposed to "how often do you feed your mantids?" which I feel is the more biologically-relevant question, if not the one that most directly affects those in the hobby. Besides, there had been...

humans eat 3 meals a day, what about mantids?

As an ambush predator insect, mantids eat whenever they have prey available and stop eating when they're full. How often a breeder feeds them is largely a human invention and boils down to "feeds them often enough that they stay plump and healthy, but not so often that the feeder insects can...

    Most Anticipated Movies of 2010

Imaginarium technically already came out (at like, three theatres nationwide) in 2009, so it doesn't count. :P

    Lets see what you use

The metal shelves were very cheap, offer plenty of air-flow, aren't a fire-hazard when paired with a heating lamp, and are cat-resistant (my cats refuse to try and stand on wire shelves). Perfect choice!

    Lets see what you use

I finally got my bigger, more permanent bug area set up (before most were hanging out on book shelves or on my snake cage to mooch off his heating lamp), so I thought I'd share how it looks currently:

Woo, just .01 g off for the empty ooth.

I'm going to go with my answer from before! .19 g.

They ate my greenie ghost female!

I didn't say they were all good reasons, especially the expert part, just the reasons why. As for doing what's best for the bugs, letting them live in the wild is probably what's actually best for them. Keeping them in cages, feeding them food that's not their normal diet (sometimes with...
