    When to give up?

Please don't put it outside. According to a recent publication, that species is not found in Washington state and it would be great if people would stop spreading it around.  If you want to know about the ooth, slice it with a razor blade by making thin slices from the end working towards the...

    Wanted

Hi all,  Looking for US mantids for an event: Stagmomantis (except Carolina), Phyllovates, Pseudovates, Iris, Oligonicella, Litaneutria, Yersiniops, etc. And and all US mantids, especially those from the Western part of the country. I have many of the Eastern species covered.  Thanks!

    Using mantids for feeders

I know they are common feeders for some reptiles amphibians. I don't see why not, a single Chinese ooth produces a lot of nymphs.

    Help determining instar?

I'll go with L4. It looks like she is a he.

What's the right thing to do?

Carolina mantids are not the only native mantids on the continent. There are many native mantids. But you're correct at least for some areas such as where you are located.  I wish more people did release Carolina mantids (in their native range) as opposed to the non-native species.

What type of Mantis do I have?

Both female Chinese mantids.  There is no need to count segments on adults of this species. They genders are easily told apart at a glance.

    30 Million-Year-Old preserved Praying Mantis

Very nice if indeed an authentic specimen. I would hope so for the selling price. My biggest hobby is fossils and I know that these types of pieces are often faked.

    Local mantis population question

I would have the same sentiment about the European mantids. They, along with the Chinese are not native to the US.

    Local mantis population question

I would say a lack of Chinese mantids is a good thing.

How often and how much to feed L2 nymphs?

You really have no need to worry. How many flies is hard to determine. The best way, already mentioned, is to just look at the abdomens. If thin and flat feed them more, if looking like about to burst feed less. I always fed mantids every other day. You will definitely need some sort of...

    Changing Container for Molting

You may want to remove all or most of the decoration. In my experience they spend most of their time on the lid so I didn't use any decorations in the cup. I did like to glue some fiberglass window screen to one side to assist in climbing up and down. The screen did not create any obstruction.

She's calling, but no one is picking up...

You can still breed and sell/give away the offspring. I figure the propagation of those mantids already in culture relieves  pressure on wild populations due to there not be so much a demand to collect them.

    Hello!

Welcome. Your technique for the flies is what I've always done. You may want to try using a funnel to pour them into the mantis enclosure. If I'm keeping mantids in the standard 32 oz deli cup I like to cut a hole in the side for the funnel. You can plug this hole with a bit of foam.

    Split along side of abdomen?

Not sure what you are seeing. Looks perfectly normal.
