    Inbreeding Effects on Mantids?

I’ve been told that inbreeding is dangerous for mantids, others have said it’s only dangerous for some species, and other times people just say it doesn’t matter with insects. So, to those with a decent amount of breeding experience, how do you feel about inbreeding? Have you noticed any...

Gender and Mating of Chinese preying Mantis

Have you noticed the deformed male having any difficulties walking around or catching prey? If so, I would suggest keeping him. If he’s clumsy, he probably won’t survive being released. And since he is a Chinese mantis, you might not want him to breed with any more wild females.

The 5 second rule doesn't count

My Stagmomantis is the only mantis I’ve had that will eat smushed bugs off of surfaces. I swatted a fly, and placed it on a branch in her habitat a few weeks ago. The next morning, it was all gone, except for a single leg left on the ground.  Most of the time I have to wave dead feeders and...

    A good life

@Allthingsterrarium PanTerraPets has H. venosa listed, but they’re currently out of stock. And as everyone else said, MantidKindom is a great place to order from in my experience.  You can find all reviews for pretty much everyone in the Breeder Feedback section.  Sorry for your loss, but have...

    Article about amazing mantis behavior

It gives me so much hope to read about stuff like this. Maybe someone is home in there.

Gender and Mating of Chinese preying Mantis

Females having disproportionately smaller wings only applies to certain species. In the case of Chinese mantises, females’ wings are supposed to extend past the abdomen. But congratulations on the successful pairing! Your female has a pretty normal build, so he should find his way around the...

Fruit flies - culture feeding difficulties

I’ve never had any issues with potting soil. If you see springtails, pillbugs, centipedes, or any form of life surviving in there, it’s safe. If it’s organic, as you said, then there should be no issues related to substrate. Just make sure not to leave any centipedes in with your mantis.

Color morphs in Leaf mimicking species?

I don’t have any experience with leaf mantises, but I have seen pictures of some with burn spots/dead spots.

Tenodera sinensis - how many molts?

You might still be able to catch a mate for her by leaving her outside at night in a well ventilated container. Supposedly people have had success luring males to the scent of the female’s pheromones. Some also say males are also attracted to lights.

    How to delete old attachments?

You delete old photo attachments by clicking the drop-down menu by your profile pic on the top right corner of the page. The second option should be My Attachments.Click on that, and you should be shown all the photos you’ve uploaded. You have to click on the link next to each photo and delete...

    Hello im from texas

Mantids don’t need to eat everyday, especially if their prey is appropriately sized.

Looks like an adult male Stagmomantis (possibly limbata or carolina?). Nice little fella!

    My Giraffe mantis

Beautiful mantis. Congratulations on the adult molt! Definitely looks like a male to me, females have puny wings and are quite fat. And glad to hear he’s eating well and still enjoys observing you.  ;)

    Hello im from texas

Looks like a Stagmomantis sp., probably a pre-sub/subadult based on the pretty large wing buds. Perhaps it is a male?

    Hello From Long Island

@SneakyMantis For future reference, if you have any more questions like this more people will see it if you make a post in the appropriate section. For this particular case, that would be the Health Issues section.

    Help for my cousin?

As far as I’m aware, no species has the common name aurora mantis, so you probably do have S. aurea, but if you could upload pics that will definitely help with identification.  I have no personal experience with this genus, but this guide from keepingexoticpets.com talks about some basic...

    MantisKingdom/DeShawn

Ordered a D. truncata and 100 BSFL’s from DeShawn. When he got my order, he actually took the time to email me and warn me that the truncata would be too small for the BSF’s at their current age, and offered to replace them with a smaller, more appropriately sized food source. It’s nice to know...

    Question About Upcoming Molt

I would advise against tape as well, it could have unhealthy substances or your mantis might try chewing itself free. There are many older posts of members with similar issues on this forum. Generally speaking, most members have had success by adding in nicely sized sticks and other better...
