Have you noticed the deformed male having any difficulties walking around or catching prey? If so, I would suggest keeping him. If he’s clumsy, he probably won’t survive being released. And since he is a Chinese mantis, you might not want him to breed with any more wild females.

I’ve never had any issues with potting soil. If you see springtails, pillbugs, centipedes, or any form of life surviving in there, it’s safe. If it’s organic, as you said, then there should be no issues related to substrate. Just make sure not to leave any centipedes in with your mantis. 

I don’t have any experience with leaf mantises, but I have seen pictures of some with burn spots/dead spots.

Mantids don’t need to eat everyday, especially if their prey is appropriately sized.

Beautiful mantis. Congratulations on the adult molt! Definitely looks like a male to me, females have puny wings and are quite fat. And glad to hear he’s eating well and still enjoys observing you.  ;)

Looks like a Stagmomantis sp., probably a pre-sub/subadult based on the pretty large wing buds. Perhaps it is a male?
