    Calling after mating?

Yes, she will still be receptive even if she has stopped calling after a sucessful mating so you can mate her multiple times with several different males before she lays her ooth. Once she lays it usually takes at least a week before she starts calling again. I leave her be for that first week...

    Calling after mating?

Most of mine usually stop after a successful mating then lay an ooth and will start calling again in maybe a week or two but  I have had more than one female continue to call right up until they lay regardless of how many times she has been mated.

    Help for my cousin?

My S. aurea are a pinkish brown color so that may very well be what your cousin has. For S. aurea you can pretty much follow basic mantis care, they don't need anything special done...they do fine at room temp in a container at least 3 times their body length in height with a substrate such as...

    Making orchid mantis pink

I've bought from 4 different breeders all with the same result.

    Making orchid mantis pink

I was going to start adding color enhancing fish food and red/orange/yellow veggies to my roaches diet to see if that makes any difference. I've tried putting pink flowers in their terrarium before but they stayed white. I'm not sure where I read it but there were experiments done that showed...

    Making orchid mantis pink

It has to be something they are exposed to because mine are very pink when they arrive from the breeder but turn stark white in 4 to 6 days without molting. I've tried different temperature and humidity levels as well as changing the color of the plants, adding pink flowers or just greenery. The...

    Chinese ooth diapause?

I've had a couple males get eaten during breeding but most I was able to save before things got too ugly. I recommend using a strip of cardboard to put between them should the female start hunting him and long stick, like a chopstick to pry them apart if she manages to grab him. I've mostly...

Thar be mold in me culture!

Yes, I use about that amount too. 100 is just the absolute bare minimum to get a good yield in my experience but it does take longer the less you use.

Thar be mold in me culture!

Hydei take a lot longer to get going than melanogaster flies. I found this in an image search comparing the life cycle of each culture.

    That's too bad.

    Making orchid mantis pink

I've been trying to figure that out. All the orchid nymphs I've gotten arrive super pink in color but turn completely white within a few days in my care. I was told  change color canbhappen when molting but this color change happens without any of them molting. I raised and lowered the...

Thar be mold in me culture!

You can get a culture started from only 20 flies?  Every time I've tried less than 100 it takes the culture a long time to get going and the yields are not that great. I guess that's acceptable if you are only feeding one or two mantids but I have a lot of nymphs so I need big yields fast.

    Chinese ooth diapause?

You can keep a chinese ooth in the fridge for several months to delay hatching. I have one in the fridge right now that's been in for 2 months and just hatched one that I had in there for about a month and a half plus almost 4 months the person I bought it from kept them in the fridge. They...

    Wild fruit flies

This thread describes how to catch wild fruit flies. You can use any of the fruit fly medium recipes available online or buy some commercial medium like Repashy Superfly. If you want flightless fruit flies you'll need to purchase a starting culture. They can be bought from several places...

Thar be mold in me culture!

A fruit fly culture generally lasts about a month and will have 2 to 4 population blooms during that time. When the population explodes is generally when I harvest flies to make a new culture. When you make a new culture you'll need at least around 100 adult flies to set it up. More is better.

    Ghost mantids in an aquarium

Each ghost needs a bare minimum  of twice it's body length horizontally and three times it's body length vertically. More space is better though, you don't want to crowd them as that can stress them out. The nymphs are fine housed all together until they are adults. Then you will need to...

    Number of orchid molts?

I did find several sources that said male orchids molt 5 times but I just raised a male I bought at L4 and he molted twice to become an adult.

L2 ghosts in a 32oz deli cup - when to separate?

Ghost are fine communally as nymphs but males and females should be separated into two groups at adulthood. Not only to prevent the obvious from happening but also because females often try to eat males, especially if a male approaches when they are not receptive to mating.

    Number of orchid molts?

Females molt 7 times, males molt 6 times.  https://www.mantidkingdom.com/mantid-care/hymenopus-coronatus/ When you see wing buds appear they only have one or two molts to go before becoming an adult.

    Is this true?

Just wanted to add that if you plan to dust feeders with pollen buy it already in powder form. If you get granules you will need to grind it to powder yourself with a coffee grinder or high powered blender. You can dust any feeder insect with the powder before feeding to your mantis or you can...
