How long do I wait to mate?

Probably want to shoot for right in the center of their recommended temperature range & stay there, not go back & forth between warm & cool.

How long do I wait to mate?

He should live about another month give or take a week. My first male ghost lived 8 weeks into his adulthood despite being handicapped. That female mauled him good too, he was missing an entire leg, half a raptorial, most of his antennae (this led to balance issues) and his wing was broken &amp...

    Red Runner Roach care?

The lid looks good, a sufficient size &  amount of holes. No worries, roaches won't suffocate in there. Ebay roach chow is probably fine, roaches will eat just about anything and the food currently available for roaches is nutritious enough. They will eat it dry or you can mix with water to...

controlling humidity in a 32oz cup

For an ooth the main concern about too much humidity is mold forming. If that is not happening don't sweat it if the humidity stays high. A lot of humidity will actually help the nymphs to hatch properly.

Female expelling white substance after mating

Nope, its still there and has completely dried up into a hard chunk. She doesn't seem to notice it's even there...probably why she hasn't tried to remove it herself. I did try applying more warm water with a Q-tip to see if I could get it to soften up enough to come off but it didn't budge, it...

How long do I wait to mate?

Yep, male ghosts barely eat anything. The one I have now has only eaten two bluebottle flies in the last 2 weeks but he still acts healthy and will enthusiastically mate with the females when I put them together. This is normal. Forcing a male to eat if he doesn't want to would only stress him...

How long do I wait to mate?

Yes, female ghosts can live as long as 5 to 8 months as an adult.  The ghost caresheet here says that ghosts are sexually mature as early as two weeks but the writer waits until 3 weeks before introducing them to breed just to be sure. The main reason to wait is to avoid cannibalization of the...

Two messed up Chinese mantises, make me sad

What kind of set up do you have them in? Can you post a pic? How often do you mist and what humidity level are you keeping them at?

How long do I wait to mate?

Wait until the female is at least two weeks old. Male ghosts don't live very long, about 6 to 8 weeks as an adult and female ghosts will lay a lot of ooths during their lifetime so getting her "stocked up" before he passes will help keep yields up for a while. It is generally recommended to...

Female expelling white substance after mating

Apparently males will eat their own spermatophore as well. I mated them again today and shortly after they were done I caught the male pulling his abdomen all the way to his mouth and noticed he was eating white stuff out of his rear. He also spent a lot of time fastidiously cleaning his entire...

Female expelling white substance after mating

I was able to find a scientific study specifically about the duration of mantid copulation & females consuming the spermatophore after copulation. https://www.researchgate.net/publication/227548368_Spermatophore_feeding_and_mating_behaviour_in_praying_mantids_Mantodea_Liturgusidae#rft

Female expelling white substance after mating

Interesting. Is there somewhere I can find an in depth scientific explanation of how praying mantis reproduction works? I've done a cursory google search and all I came up with was very basic information.

controlling humidity in a 32oz cup

When you mist a container humidity will sometimes shoot up to as high as 99% (especially if you accidentally mist the sensor) but it usually stablizes to a more reasonable percentage after a few hours. If it doesn't go back down then your substrate is probably too wet. Take some out and mix it...

Female expelling white substance after mating

My Rhombodera basalis pair have successfully mated three times in the last 2 weeks. The first two times the connection lasted 5 or 6 hours but the last time they remained connected for 2 days straight. She has not yet laid an ooth since being bred but she's due to do so any day now. After...

    Red Runner Roach care?

I fixed the link.  I just got the biggest drill bit I could find (not sure of size, maybe 3/8" or 1/2"?) and drilled lots of holes in the lid...no specific number, just as many as would fit with about 1/4" to 1/2" between the holes and leaving at least a 2" border on the edges untouched with no...

    Red Runner Roach care?

I have about 200 roaches in an 11 gallon Ziploc storage container (20"L x 16"W x 11"H) that locks & has a watertight seal. I drilled a bunch of large holes in the lid it came with and hot glued fine mesh fiberglass window screen to the underside of the lid and a large coffee filter on the...

    Can this work?

You can put live moss on the substrate, I did that in all my planted exo terras. As for on the branches maybe sparingly so they are able to still climb the branches without there being a thick layer of moss to get in the way. The rest of it sounds good. This is a pic of my first planted...

    So disappointed

It depends on the species but there are a couple of sellers that have a few praying mantises for $10 or under.  Try MantidKingdom.com and Mantidsgalore.com

    Can this work?

That's a beautiful terrarium but no, this set up is far from ideal for a mantis and I don't see many ways to fix it.The standing water is a big problem, it is a drowning hazard if they fall during molting or for any other reason. Also mantids like to hang from the ceiling, while most species can...

    new mantids

Whoops...surprise. You'll like the Eremiaphilia they are fun little things. They remind me of Jimney Cricket...if he drank 10 cups of coffee & was a vicious hunter. They have these big eyes and they can run FAST! Mine are to the point where they can eat small roaches & blue bottle...
