options other than flies and crickets

Depending on what mantis you get, roaches are a really good alternative to crickets. They do not smell, are easy to breed, and are much healthier. I recommend the Red runner roach, also known as the Turkestan roach S. lateralis. Red runner roaches are very similar in size to crickets and do not...

    #FruitFliesEscapeFree Enclosures!?

Mesh net cages with fine netting are good for fruit flies as long as they are small enough holes. Also you can put a thin mesh netting or paper towel over the top of the mantis enclosure to keep in the flies which is what I do for fruit flies. Another good enclosure that is fruit fly proof is...

Female Carolina possibly about to lay eggs, how do you tell?

Has she started laying an ootheca? If she is ready to she should start soon. It's very possible she is about to lay one. Usually you can tell if they are rather plump. When a female mantis lays an ootheca she will wiggle her abdomen slightly and use the two cerci on her abdomen to form the foam...

    Ghost Mantis Mites

I find grain mites a very annoying battle as well. They never seem to go away completely and pop up out of no where! One way is to put the fly containers on anti mite paper. Just be sure not to get the anti mite paper, which is poison, into contact with the flies or mantises. The best way is...

Mantis ID in Savannah GA - Mantis walking on Spiderweb!

I would say perhaps the grass mantis Thesprotia graminis. They have extremely thin legs similar to what you described. And are small too. Look up pictures of them and see if it looks like what you saw. They do live in your state.

    Mystymantis mantises

The first Ghost nymphs have reached adulthood! Callalily is a pretty pale green color with tan/gold wings. And Marigold is aptly named because she is practically golden. She molted to L7 the other day.  Marigold was not thrilled I was disturbing her to get pictures. And far too many more Ghost...
