    Crazy Mantis Story! (mantis rescue)

I have occasionally put my hand in to adjust something and it walks off its perch onto my hand and then hangs off my hand. I "handle" it very delicately and then put it back. He actually dried perfect. Here are some pictures I just took:

How do you measure an adult mantis?

I go from the end of the wings to the face. If you count the hind-leg stance its too subjective to measure depending on specific posture. I think my Rhombodera extensicollis is about 4"

MY GIANT ASIAN SHIELD MANTIS MOLTED!!!!!

Thanks. Basalis' are cool.... Yeah an hour, plus or minus a half hour. Couldn't answer how long it will live, but I've heard Rhombodera are longer living ones (my extensicollis is about 6 mo. old so far). I think usually a male will have about half the adult lifespan as a female.

    Crazy Mantis Story! (mantis rescue)

Well the surprise (to me anyway) was that a drowned bug can be brought back to life. But the adult molt (and eating again) just showed he was completely okay, as he was acting strange when he first came back to life.

    Ghost breeding, up close pics.

These two ghosts are mating for like the third time, lol. Thought you might want a look.

    Giant asian mantis enclosure

Genius idea with the plastic wrap! I'm definitely taking that one for the dryer season.

MY GIANT ASIAN SHIELD MANTIS MOLTED!!!!!

Congratulations! I have two Giant Asain Shield Mantids. R. extensicollis and R. megera. You know its a Rhombodera (my 2nd favorite genus) but do you know what specific species it is?

How to care for a cat eyed mantis

I had two heterochaeta that died by mismolt during their final molt. The first time was my fault due to inexperience and keeping it in a small container one night (I had ordered a 10 gallon I was going to pick up the next day) but she decided to molt the first night I had her and didn't have...

    Sphodromantis vomiting brown liquid

Hope she pulls through, my first and most beloved mantis was an S. lineola.... Listen to Synapze, he pretty much covered it.

    Hi everyone!

Hey, welcome to the forums. I too have a Sphodromantis sp. (I think its either a bacetti or the so-called "Blue Flash") and 5 ghosts....

Chinese Mantis Vomiting or Pooping dark brown/black

I concur that the humidity is not the problem but keep in mind the target for that species is 60-5% (and its really 40-65% range; lower is better than higher) but maybe feeding him some flies will be better for the diet. Also keep in mind that, in the words of a great mantis breeder, "bugs just...

Chinese Mantis Vomiting or Pooping dark brown/black

Not to steal the thread, but we should really start a sticky on this topic in the health section. It gets asked a lot because its a common health problem....

    Recent Breeding Pics et al

So do you think putting them under LED lights and a more consistent night day schedule would be beneficial for them? I did so recently for temperature and aesthetic reasons.

What do you mean by light intensity. Can you elaborate?

    Eye help

Never knew or thought about that.... Interesting. No problem. Good luck with your mantis. Worse comes to worse you can hand feed him every other day if he gets to where he can no longer hunt.

    Eye help

Also I have seen mantises with this, and even worse than the one in your picture, and they lived long lives and were still able to hunt. So, it can't affect their vision too much if they can still catch flies. I have heard of it getting bad to the point of blindness but keep an 'eye' out if the...

Great job with the enclosure. I assume (or maybe didn't read) that you have a lighting system. With a good hygrometer/thermometer mantis raising is basically keeping those in range for whatever the species requires. I don't mean to be reductive but enclosure as a prerequisite and temp and...
