Breeding Soldier Flies, indoors with a lamp

So, some folks struggle to get black soldier flies to breed indoors without sunlight. It seems to be easier than suggested. I have yet to perfect it so far, but this simple setup worked for me. I've done very little for them besides feed them until they pupated, and turn the lamp on in the day...

    3rd Time's the Charm

Okay, so far my oothecae have all hatched within 24 hrs, but I read with the Eremiaphila that they tend to hatch over 2 months. Also I know many do not spray their oothecae due to mold concerns, but I also read a few accounts of ooth often hatching after a good spraying and that it might help...

    3rd Time's the Charm

Thanks guys. Yeah, its great, although a bit nerve racking. The second hatchling didnt get its legs apart before hardening so he got stuck, AND nobody else has come out yet! So now I'm worried its too dry. I sprayed to ooth to try to help them emerge incase it was a little dry, because I am...

    Humidity

I have very low humidity during winter from the heating and only mist my deli cups' when the substrate begins to start to dry, once or twice a week. As for heat mat it would be fine most mantids enjoy the warmth. I keep most of mine at 70-80 and they seem not to mind.

    Roaches

Banana roaches aka Panchlora nivea are cute ones and adults are under an inch. Theres also a species being called 'giant banana roach' that gets over an inch. They are fast and move erraticly, plus they like to fly, so they are great feeders for mantids.

    3rd Time's the Charm

I am super excited today. MY ORCHIDS ARE HATCHING :D This is my third time buying Hymenopus coronatus stock and first success. I was lucky enough to spot the first baby hatch out it is just unfolding its legs on the substrate and Im watching intently. *passes out cigars*

    Malaysian Blue Mantis

Hello Elliot, nice mantid. Sounds like you've tried a good variety already, but you could also try roaches. They are available in many varieties and are usually large, which can be nice for large mantids if you find feeding tons of little things annoying. You could also try Morio worms, which...

Adult Orchid Females in same enclosure?

You can if you like but cannibalism is always a risk even with so called 'communal' species. I too wanted to try keeping some together at first, but after seeing my lovely mantids attacking and eating each other.. I keep them seperately. So its not really advisable unless you are okay with...
