    What's your least favorite insect?

Jiggers and chiggers are two different pests entirely. The former is a tropical flea, the latter a temperate mite larva.

Hot glue gun for large silkmoth cocoons?

As quoted from the very first and one of the most reliable sources to pop up with a search on North American butterflies and moths: "Leaves and silk are used to spin papery brown cocoons in litter under the host plant." https://www.butterfliesandmoths.org/species/Actias-luna This fits with the...

Hot glue gun for large silkmoth cocoons?

According to the sheets I have found thus far, Luna moths bury themselves in the soil oftentimes so they do not expect to be hanging from a branch somewhere. In recent (though accidental) experience there is also no issue with other species that normally hang to hatch out from cocoons resting on...

    On Royal Wings

Confirmed the Cecropia is a female: Cecropia eggs by Hawken Carlton, on Flickr Additionally, I had set two cocoons aside from two of my other species in hopes that they'd hatch in time to show my lab students (sadly, they did not), and last night this beautiful Polyphemus female popped out! A...

    On Royal Wings

Starting a new thread in case this branches out as a hobby too, but for now I just have one new temporary houseguest to share: Cecropia moth by Hawken Carlton, on Flickr I have no mates for this individual, as it was a free gift alongside some mantid ooths, but perhaps in the future. In any...

    Non-Mantis related hobbies

Just about anywhere, though preferably near some sort of water (rivers, lakes, etc.). Beyond that it doesn't matter much; I live by the mountains, on the plains, travel to further places occasionally (like Big Bend National Park)....

    Non-Mantis related hobbies

Non-mantis hobbies: raising reptiles and herping (seeking out wild reptiles and amphibians), growing carnivorous plants (and cataloging files of them all), sketch/paintings, fanfic writing, fishing, camping...also origami and other crafts when I feel like it (origami used to be all I did in...

    hcarlton's Mantid Photos

Been a while since I posted in this thread (I have more time to get photos onto Instagram, Carlton Carnivores), but a few pics of recent developments are due:  The first P. agrionina female has matured. The other is several molts behind still, but the male might be soon to mature Parasphendale...

Elmantis sp. ooths and nymphs FS

Two ooths currently available; I am hoping to sell both together for $25 as I am uncertain of the fertility of one (experienced a temperature swing one day and I don't know the impact).  I also have several I2-I4 nymphs available currently, asking $8 apiece.  US only, message for further details.

    A special new arrival

The Carlton Carnivores family welcomes two new members; still haven't found a girlfriend for Hobbes like I wanted, but these will do for now :P First up, Irwin the Kenyan sand boa! He's a bit shy, somewhat shy about feeding as well, but I'm sure he'll come around. Irwin by Hawken Carlton, on...

    LF Adult male T. pantherina

As the title says, I'm in search of a healthy adult male Tarachodula pantherina, as my original male decided to ignore all attempted food given and died about a week and a half after molting to adult. Chubby female needs a mate! US Only.

    FS Ghost ooths (SOLD)

    hcarlton's Mantid Photos

2nd generation of ghosts! I think I have 30+ from 3 or 4 different ooths at the moment (there appears to have been a fair die-off rate straight out of the ooths, sadly), and still another 5 or 6 ooths yet to hatch (I'd be happy to sell a few, rather than hatch them all). P. paradoxa by Hawken...

    A special new arrival

Burmese pythons are slow, doesn't necessarily translate to being more docile; from the reports I've heard they're more likely to be the biters when young as opposed to retics as well. Retics have a strong feed response and are more energetic, but this does not equate to being bad-tempered...

    A special new arrival

If you're dumb enough to put yourself in a situation where that could happen, it's probably deserved. Deaths by big snakes occur when either the owner decides to wrap the animal around their neck, the snake feels unbalanced and so tightens up to hold on, and....or, they fail to signal to the...

    A special new arrival

Rule of talking about snakes, spiders, etc. that may carry toxins: careful what word you're using. There are maybe 3 that are poisonous, more that are venomous, and that is the word most people mean to use. It is an important distinction too, medically and how you deal with the animal. But, no...
