So I was told ghost males are short-lived, and they don't eat...this guy's been fully mature for over a month now, approaching pushing a month and a half, and he munches most of the houseflies I stick in his cup...is he anomalous?  P. paradoxa male by Hawken Carlton, on Flickr

    Welcome to the Jungle

If you have the means to give them enough light (4 hours to all day full sun or equivalent depending on the plant) and pure water (distilled or rainwater etc.) then you can grow most carnivores. Humidity is not a primary factor, aside from acclimating a plant grown in high humidity to lower...

    Welcome to the Jungle

Sorry I didn't see this earlier; most are given dilute fertilizer or for sundews and other sticky plants dried bloodworms, bigger pitcher plants occasionally an expired roach or mantis. If you NEED to get into this hobby, I've always got several dozen things for sale :)

Never had megaera so I couldn't tell you with any certainty. I would not imagine it much different. @Cole 78: the last update was yesterday, previous page.

This is the 4th ooth from the 2 green females in a week! Somehow I missed the laying of the first, so I ended up with 2 on one stick from one female... P. paradoxa ooth by Hawken Carlton, on Flickr Now hopefully to see them through hatching. I read after I'd placed them in my incubator (sits...

Your male may already be aging out. They don't live long normally.

I think I find the ghosts more attractive personally, but then I have a thing for the weirdest designs :P  Though I can't deny the shields will be a mainstay in my breeding so long as I can keep them going. Not sure what you mean by "rescue the male;" if referring to ghosts they're generally...

    A special new arrival

Of the two not visible, one of them better fits this thread, as it's a 3D snake...but I ain't gonna deny my love of Zootopia either :) As of today, it's been confirmed that Hobbes will be a decent feeder (if perhaps shy; he didn't touch his mouse until I'd left the room for a half hour), so...

    A special new arrival

It's been a couple years since my last pet acquisition (the mantids don't count) when I got my two milk snakes, so today a visit to a reptile expo added another...he'll be staying with the milks at my sister's high school science room most of the year, but still my snake. Meet Hobbes! He's an...

    Your favorite species?

Whatever catches my eye tends to be the new favorite (particularly would love to keep Ermiaphila, Idolomantis, and Metallyticus, but I have no place with proper conditions for them), but among those I've kept fav is currently without question the ghosts. Easy, amusing, the funkiest shapes...

    hcarlton's Mantid Photos

I had a stick mantis hatch! Unfortunately it was small, with only 9 hatchlings, and only 5 nymphs still live on, so I haven't taken photos yet. Nothing from the subsequent ooth either, but the mated female did lay a third yesterday... Additionally, I've lost one of my panther females, and one...
