    Encouraging ooths

    Encouraging ooths

About 6 weeks ago my mated R. basalis female laid an ooth, and it hatched after almost 4 weeks to the day (followed by a dishearteningly high die-off), but unlike all the other mantids I've had breed thus far, in the time since that same female has yet to lay a second ooth, and I am unsure what...

    Number of orchid molts?

I've always been told males only molt 5 times, which is in part why they mature so much more rapidly and end up so much smaller than the females.

Supposedly, 5-6 weeks. I can't say with certainty yet of course since this is my first. Also, though mantids are admittedly still a very small part of my focus, I have finally launched my own site and have the mantid sales page up! The Database pages will follow eventually...

Mating may or may not have already been successful with the H. membranacea (she's visibly calling now though, might try introducing another male though fair chance she might eat him too). However, a previous mating has definitely proven successful: Rhombodera basalis by Hawken Carlton, on...

    Seeking adult male Heterochaeta orientalis!

Reposting; I am still seeking a male of this species! All 3 of my females are unquestionably mature enough to breed at this point, and I need a male that's also ready to go. I can purchase, trade for one of the females, trade for an ooth should I succeed, or if my Rhombodera basalis or H...

    Idolomantis/Metallyticus/Eremiaphila/etc.

Voracious little things...I find it amusing the one photo where he's so hungry he doesn't even care that he's practically upside down.

Another species on the eventual want list; who cares if it's small, when it looks that cool it's worth looking into

I'm sure it is, I just haven't had the time/patience to try getting it to sit in a position so I can count the sections. Plus it's a lot easier when they get big. Oh, and adding to successes: the mated R. basalis female laid an ooth!

    hcarlton's Mantid Photos

    H. orientalis still await a mature male (and I suspect any day now I might start seeing infertile ooths from the oldest two), and the mated R. basalis has yet to lay (anyone know their preferences on laying sites, if they have any?), but I found something very special in the orchid house a...

Even more, perhaps better success tonight: Hymenopus coronatus by Hawken Carlton, on Flickr And Blue went for a second mating with that female today since he never left her all night, but unfortunately, when finished, he didn't leave, and she probably chewed him enough that he won't survive to...

While I struggle finding a new potential mate for the now 3 adult H. orientalis females, I have meanwhile finally had success getting the R. basalis to mate! Seeking adult male Heterochaeta orientalis!

In an unfortunate turn of events the last male I had starved himself out, and I am now left with two adult and soon to be fully mature and one very mature subadult female stick mantid that are in need of a mate. If anyone has one to spare, I am willing to trade either the younger female perhaps...
