Mist with water using a spray bottle. Can o crickets and mealworms have lots of water if you can get them to eat it.

    Found a dying mantis outside

I decided to let her go. Next two days turned out to be nice weather and the bugs are out everywhere. I released her in a shrub that is infested with scale insects and is a hot spot for ootheca laying. It attracts flies and yellow jackets due to sweet secretions from scale insects. It gets...

    Found a dying mantis outside

She eats, but by hand feeding. She is active just refuses to hunt could be not used to captivity. Her poo is liquid now due to the can food having lots of liquid, that's why I need her to eat live prey to normalize it.

    Found a dying mantis outside

I am thinking of keeping her, but how do I setup a cage, and how do I get her to lay ootheca on branches I put in (that way I can tie them outside in bushes). Do I mist cage with water for a drink? She has ability to hunt but so far all I can do is hand feed her she isn't trying to catch prey I...

How many ootheca do chinese mantis lay?

I found a wild female near death and stick thin. With hand feeding she ate and put on weight fast and is acting normal, however it's October and in New York days and nights are in 60s 50s and 40s it fluctuates. Is she done laying ootheca? If I fed her is she able to lay more? I'm torn between...

    Found a dying mantis outside

I checked it is female. I wanted to release her if she can lay more eggs. If she cannot lay more eggs than perhaps keeping Her might be better.

    Found a dying mantis outside

I'm pretty sure if female she layed ootheca and was dying of weakness/starvation it was stick thin. We did have it in the 40s 2 days ago so the mantis had to be stressed. If female is it possible she could lay another ootheca or once they are finished they don't lay anymore? The weather is in...

    deformed mantid nymphs doing well

You were right, the twisted one didnt make it, could get out of his old skin the neck kink made it get stuck and he died, I tried he had better life than dying outside hours after birth from starvation or being eaten.

    deformed mantid nymphs doing well

Purchased egg cases and these were ones that hatched out with issues. The first did so well I released it saw it going after bugs in my shrubs. The second eats so much but still hasn't shed yet, I'm keeping humidity slightly high with lots of branches so fingers crossed it can molt normally.

Flightless fruit flies, not so flightless!

I bought an older culture of flightless fruit flies from Petco. When I opened the jar a handful flew away and some glided a foot or more. After reading I learned after a few generations these can start producing flying individuals and from there you pretty much are going to have flying stock. I...

    0% Hatch rate.

I live in New York. I purchased local mantid and chinese mantid ootheca at my garden center in March. I hung them in a cage and kept them in my garage, misting them with water once every two weeks. As the weather warmed I would mist them once a day. They just hatched end of June which is about...

Feeding baby mantids that emerged deformed or missing legs

All of them can walk and eat but eating they can't catch prey so I hand feed and so far they are getting plump. Squished can o crickets and aphids are their favorite foods right now. There is always a chance they could shed and fix the body so I'm giving them a chance.

Someone pick a color: brown or green

The yellow color is beautiful and rare and I don't think you can influence color. If I could influence color pink would be nice !

Non insect foods mantises can eat?

I understand bee pollen only because they sit on flowers and if they eat bees they also eat pollen. What about honey, technically that's inside bees too.
