    My black morph Eastern Lubbers

Lubbers are so fun for kids! Their slow clumsy nature makes them quite easy to handle. When they come out and our kids catch them in the yard, then we get to buy lettuce for ourselves and the lubbers! (= Some years there are a lot more and some years there are very few.

    False start molting

Although I took pictures beforehand, she finally did molt. It took 4-5 days altogether and another girl ended up molting before her. By the last day I decided to run warm water over her. I am not sure if this helped, but it might have - as she did molt that night. I'll see if I have some time...

    Low(er) Humidity Mantids?

European mantids would work - they could live in Wisconson in the summer. (=

    False start molting

I'll see if I can take a pic. She can still look around but she is mostly ignoring food now. A few days ago she even made her legs limp (straight) while in the classic molting position and I was almost sure she would molt. Her wingbuds look swollen. Her color has dulled dramatically compared to...

    False start molting

Yeah - the color has dulled quite a bit and even her eyes even look a little cloudy.

    False start molting

Hey there Everyone, Quick question: I have a subadult female spiny flower that has had her exoskeleton get cloudy and been in position (with the related bottom movements) to molt several times in the last couple days but nothing yet. Humidity is good so I am not sure what may be holding her...

    Local Mantis Populations have plummetted

Just thought I would say, with the poor rain this last several winters, the Southern Arizona mantis population has plummeted. Where I once saw ten or more ootheca I am now lucky to see one. Have any of you in California noticed the same thing?

    Alligator lizards

Honestly, I don't know who would want to keep an angry lizard that always bites! Their rarity probably has more to do with the terribly dry conditions the last several years than with anyone taking them from the wild. If we want their wild population to increase we need to pray for more rain!

    Alligator lizards

I believe they eat other lizards as well as anything smaller than them that moves, (insects, worms, arachnids) short of bombarder beetles and ants. If you have not experienced yet, they bite hard enough to draw blood. The Audubon Society field guide to Reptiles and Amphibians is always very...

I FINALLY MADE A SUCCESSFUL MOTH CULTURE!!!

Congrats... However... Though this is perhaps a good replacement for big D. Hydei/small flies I would be VERY hesitant to culture them as one gravid female could cause years of trouble in the cupboards.

    new orchid mantis enclosure

Something to think about, Denise: Arizona is a beautiful place to be in the winter. Now is the perfect time to be here! However, be aware that mid-April to October can be brutal. As if the days are not hot enough, some summers the night lows do not get below 80 degrees for weeks. Don't get me...

    Basic questions about naming mantids

Okay – perhaps this is just me – but I have problems with naming a mantis until it reaches adulthood. For some reason I have difficulty with making the commitment of a name until I am pretty sure my mantises wont end up writhing at the bottom of the enclosure from a freak mismoult. I wonder if...
