    Idolo cannibalism =(

Wow. That would have been a great photo to post.

    Idolo death mystery!

I don't think (or predict) you'll be able to go much further with deli cups for these guys. What are your plans for the last instars?

    Adult female Idolo

Yeah - just be really careful with the duct tape - it can still be sticky on the sides or where you cut it.

    Idolo cannibalism =(

Yeah, that was not MY experience. And I can't remember any Idolo eating the same day they molted. Way too soggy. Are you sure you've fingered the right suspect?

    The Joy of Spares

Amen! The other great luxury is a cart - like a bus cart from a restaurant. Available flat space is always at a premium - so adding a portable, moving table is a huge boon! If I were to design (or redesign) an official bug room, I'd add an "island" in the center with good plumbing and hoses...

+1 Gorgeous! And I have those same flowers at home - amazing fragrance!

    Idolo death mystery!

Yup! Both have historical (and photographic) proof of concept.

    Idolo death mystery!

Check the Consolidated page - lots of photos and discussions there (and well worth the time to skim it). Most important is something they can get a grip on (or into). I just glue the material to the top, and sometimes to the sides (remember, they can't climb glass). I also glue... struts...

    The Joy of Spares

Yeah - with some of the communals, I clean the cages as in-frequently as possible. They kinda stake out their territories and get comfortable. But I've learned I can't go TOO long between cleanings. Ugh!

    Idolo death mystery!

I've never experienced high humidity as a problem. What kind of enclosure did you say you had...? And did you alter the top to sticks or nylon? If the top material is correct, you can quite honestly (IMO) remove ALL other items in the enclosure. Your mantis will climb it's own skin. The...

    The Joy of Spares

Right. So, without the benefit of spares: 1. Move to temp. 2. Clean original cage. 3. Move critters back to original cage. Repeat. The joy of spares allows you to skip a step: 1. Move to New 2. Clean. Repeat. Easier, faster, and less "stress" on the critter (if one considers such...

    The Joy of Spares

I've been meaning to write this little commentary(?) for a while. Anyone caring for large numbers of critters (or large numbers of enclosures), has probably already found "the joy of spares". It is SO much easier to transfer your critters to a nice, clean and properly prepared SPARE...

    Best Substrate

+1, sad to say. As much as I LOVE an eye-pleasing enclosure - all colorful and thought-out, in large numbers, it's probably just papertowels. For enclosures that aren't needing the substrate for moisture-retention, I have a large box of sandwich wraps from Smart & Final (essential wax...

Enter The Mantis (narrated by David Attenborough)

Yea!!! I really enjoy shows like that! Did you hear when he said that turtles were on the menu!?! That's a new one to me!

    Silkmoth Keepers

    Never gets old.

    Silkmoth Keepers

Fair enough. :-) The size is the cool part for me, but... yeah - add that to Flash Gordon style landings, and eeek! And, yeah... never had a problem mating them. Very... prolific.

What freaks you out about Polys...?

    Silkmoth Keepers

Nice. A good start to a small sub-community!

    New Idolo stopped eating!

Nice. I mentioned this in a different thread, but I keep mine on Hydei until L3, with just the occasional housefly or small wild-caught moth. They need to catch a lot more (obviously), but, hey... they need the practice. :-) But, seriously, the reason is, they really don't eat much OF the...
