    Idolomantis Consolidated

Here's a good idea of how big they get... L1 and Adult on a Tennis Ball, with a hand in the shot.

    Violin COMMUNAL?

Some of them laid fine (I happened more than once), but no - no bizzaro babies. As for your dream - You'd need to plan out THAT tank properly, while have separate tanks to lead up to that one. I think your Orchids will eat everything less than, or equal to, their own size. Same with the Dead...

    Gongy molt

BTW - I thought this thread was entitled "Gongy MELT" and that someone had created a truly distasteful new sandwich. I'm glad I read it wrong. :-)

Hahaha! Never a dull moment! :-)

    Violin COMMUNAL?

Hahah! I'm a sucker for a challenge. I put all my non-mated Creos in with my Idolos to (A) eat off all the extra flies, ( B) save shelf space for more Idolo cages and © prove that Idolos wouldn't attack the creo females, since it was unlikely they'd flap their wings (males on the other hand...

    Violin COMMUNAL?

Hahahah! I don't know if I posted this before, but they are SOOOO going to fight that classification! (Not for the squeamish). Here's a pic of a female Creo EATING and ADULT Idolo!!! No kidding! She got the Idolo as it was drying it's wings. C-c-c-crazy!! Now that's bad*ss!

    Lost my brother today.

Poor thing. My heart goes out to you.

    Violin COMMUNAL?

For me, when I have a big colony of adult females, I can afford the risks of occasional losses. I think the average for my creos was something like 4 full ooths per female. So it wasn't like I wouldn't get a new generation. And with a good size colony, you can't even GIVE them away fast...

    Gongy molt

I totally agrees with you on perch & nutrition. And you're probably/possibly correct on the humidity (or lucky). My experiences with dry conditions for Gongy's was the same as yours, but I experienced trouble below 40%RH with the Idolos, even in the low instars. But NO ill-effects...

    Idolomantis Consolidated

Obviously, I'm an Idolo fan. The claws are really more like venus fly traps than crushing spears. I've never had one grab me with them (ever). Just threat displays and jabs. Gripen gives you good advice (thanks, Gripen) when he recommends not to handle them before L5 - or ever, really. But...

    Violin COMMUNAL?

+1. I love, love, love communal setups! And Gongy's were a great choice FOR a communal setup (and ghosts). I thought the rare care of friendly fire was considered an acceptable loss for the greater prize of a beautiful display (no modesty here). :-) As mentioned by others, adult females are...

    Phyllocrania consolidated

My idea with the "Consolidated" thread was to gather a LOT of data and opinions from existing sources, and then allow THIS forum (the US contingent) to put the literature to the test. Once we let it set long enough, we'd publish a sort of "Official" Mantidforum caresheet - complete with...

    L4/5 Idolos

Watch the BB's with L1's. They can knock em off their perches - especially when molting. I used to toss my small enclosures into my GIANT Netcage, and put a light at the top to attract the flies out of the cages when the first molt was near. Barring that, I'd just open the enclosures and shoo...

    Mosquito Hawks

Just an update - I saw my first Mosquito Hawk of 2012 tonight. So all you SoCal mantid-lovers - keep your eyes peeled.

    Female Idolo

Sounds good to me. You'll see that it blocks quite a bit of light (depending on the weave of it). You can cut strips out of it to let more light in, if you care. Good luck!
