Welcome! Nice looking dead leafs. Looks to me like a D. Dessicata. The first looks like a adult due to the wings and the second looks to be presub or sub adult(one or two molts away from adult). Have fun with those guys!

I have gotten my hands on a sub adult female H. Major. This was the last one the breeder had and I’m not so sure on how many people have them in the US. I would LOVE to continue this species here and have them more commonly available since they are my dream mantis...  So I’m on the lookout for...

Hm usually nymphs won’t overeat... I feed flies the size of the mantis many times. I’d say something was wrong with the cricket... though it’s hard to say.

I use dubias.... I’m not a fan of roaches but it’s not like I try and look at them... I just take one out with tweezers and try and get the mantis to eat it!

No mantis don’t necessarily need roaches. But it’s a lot easier and healthier to feed adult females with them

5 weeks is really young for a ooth that is normally diapaused. From what I heard you can expect a waiting time close to 3 months. But yes darkness means the life is progressing.

@Tonypace2009 I have kept them with success in 32 oz deli cups... I use mesh lids with this sp.. I did have one of them fall as soon as he started molting. Fortunately I was there and able to help him. Since then no problems. You could try a net cage if you are really struggling. Just remember...

So I have gotten some info on this from a pretty reliable source... apparently the Egyptian species of thistles need to be diapaused as nymphs(weird af I know) when the are around presub until they molt to sub. Like keeping them room temp or a little lower until they molt to sub. Still feed them...

Welcome. Beautiful mantis you got there! I would recommend bluebottle flies for food. You can buy pupae online.

@CosbyArt thanks for the link! I don’t think my girl would bite me... uhhh actually she probably would mistake it for food lol. I have no doubt if she bit it would not be pleasant. Not to mention yesterday she stabbed a full grown dubia with her claws so hard that her raptoral claws were about...

Lol my S. Lineola adult female has made some pretty sizable holes in her net cage from chewing on the netting instead of her roach.... holes almost big enough for BB flies to escape through.... I’ve been scared of her ever since :D  

The perfect set ups, in my opinion, are deli cups and net cages. This is all I use except for a few terrariums. 32 oz can hold small sp their entire lives. There are 80 oz deli cups that will House the medium adult sp. Or get net cages(butterfly cages) and they work amazingly for the bigger sp.

I’m so sorry to hear about Ripley :(  ... it’s always tough when they die in a mystery and you have no idea what happened:... it’s so weird that she showed no symptoms. Hopefully your other mantis can help comfort you while she is away.
