    Mantidforum Software Update

Can a couple members try to post an ad that just says "testing" in the various fields? A handful of people are reporting that they can't post ads. I tried and was able to post a Testing one last night but what the general member set may have an issue that I cannot see on my screen.

    Mantidforum Software Update

Hey, a couple people mentioned having trouble posting classified ads. And it's odd to see so few lately. I tried posting a test one and it worked but two members said they could not post them. There is one more little update that I'm having done.

    Mantidforum Software Update

Sometime in the next 8 days the forum software will be updated. Not sure what the new changes are but mostly I'm doing it for the security patches, etc. Also, I'm not so sure that I won't have to do a major upgrade the next time around as they are moving from the 3.X.X series to the 4.0 versions...

    4K Ultra HD Bug Videos

Recently, John Farr from StockFootage.com came over with his 4K Ultra HD video camera and shot clips of pet bugs. Thanks to our moderator Orin for donating a few specimens for the video including the giant Heterophrynus batesii which, as a perfect adult, is otherwise impossible to source...

    Rick - (US)

Rick is a pillar in the mantis community, and a wonderful source for US material. Oothecae of three US species! Not easy to acquire. Thanks Rick!

    Bug bite?

I've had three spider bites in the past month (I spend a lot of time outdoors collecting). I get mosquito bites all the time too. Everything likes to bite me, but that's another story for another time. Bite number one on the side of the neck. 1.5 inches in diameter, blistered over. Mild...

    Why do you keep them?

Mantis keepers should be able to relate to the dramatic aspects of the hunt and capture behaviors that centipede keepers enjoy. For some the adrenaline rush of keeping something that could bite and hurt them too is part of the thrill! Think "skydiving" and "bungee jumping", or like I've been...

    Hello from Riverside, CA!

Welcome, Trundlebug. Did you attend the insect event in Riverside last Saturday? I'd like to hear a little bit about how it was.

    Something AMAZING has happened...

Awesome, Henry! We've all been waiting for years for some celebrity to keep a pet mantis and bring this fascinating hobby into mainstream American life. Maybe we've been coming at it from the wrong direction. Mantises first, and celebrity follows. Okay, we're all counting on you! I wish you...

To entomologists and anyone else interested: Tested puke! Interesting results

Interesting stuff. I wonder if the little white specks were mites vs. springtails vs. booklice. I've seen all three appear out of thin air, now and then. Also I wonder if they weren't attracted to the agar itself ,or even a film on the container. All three of these animals probably live in many...

    New to mantids. Which breed.

Geez, I should have a really solid answer to that question and I could look it up but I recall something from a recent software version update about "gravatars". Maybe you set up a "globally recognized avatar" at some point? https://en.gravatar.com/ Of course, I like to remain open minded to...

    Communal ghost mantis enclosure

Mantises are a lot like tarantulas (but without venom, and that you can hold in all cases, and that don't fall into the "pet hole in the ground" category, and with eyes and head movements that are so much more relatable). Like tarantulas they are relatively still until they attack, although...

How to spot when a moult is about to happen?

Just a quick note to say that a 3rd instar mantis began life as a 1st instar and will only have shed 2 times by the time it is 3rd instar (L3). (So she won't do her fourth shed until she is molting from L4 to L5.) Mantises are unlikely to molt until their abdomens are quite plump. Young orchids...

    New to mantids. Which breed.

The Miomantis are a little small for my tastes. The Chinese are great though I don't personally advocate releasing them even though they are an established species and the US agriculture industry just LOVES them because they're a great ally against so-called pests to their non-native or...

How to Get Over your Ex this Valentine's Day

Great post! In between marriages I went to a local event/hike on V-day called "Slug Love". I fell in love with the young woman leading the hike, though she never knew it. In the passing years I've long since forgotten her face but I can easily remember all the slugs we saw. What can I say? I've...
