    Selective breeding for new traits?

I don't know that I see much of a difference at all.  Snakes and mantids are like apples and oranges in that one is a vertebrate and one is not but I don't see how the concept of selective breeding should be an issue with one and not the other. Why is breeding different colors of snakes morally...

    Wheel Bug Eggs

Thanks bugguy  I've been keeping them over paper towel that I keep wet but I'll start misting.  Any idea on hatching time at about 75 degrees. Cuervo-  no babies yet just eggs

    Pet fish (Lake Victoria Cichlids)

Victorians are cool.  I'm more into the Tanganyikans myself.  I like the Julidochromis, Lamprologus and neolamps especially.  I always found the victorians to be a beautiful but confusing lot.  Colored up they rival some of the most colorful saltwater fish.

    Wheel Bug Eggs

I purchased a couple of female wheel bugs from Kyle (I think it was Kyle) at the NARBC expo in Tinley Park last fall.  One died about 2 months ago but I checked this morning and found a nice little batch of eggs from the second one.  I'm looking for information on how to care for them but so...

    "Wild Type" Melongaster

Thanks for the tips but these were new cultures with the first generation of flies. Well, first generation for these cultures anyway, I'm not sure how many generations they went through before I got them. I still have the old culture I made them from and it has gone through another cycle and...

    "Wild Type" Melongaster

I'm sorry to say I am dealing with the flying variety right now. I made up 3 cultures from "flightless" adults and every time I open the lid it looks like someone kicked a giant puffball. I'm not sure where the stock came from but it certainly was not very good. I'm sure some people have...

Milkweed bug (Oncopeltus fasciatus) as feeders?

Thanks for the tips. That probably explains the smell the guy I got the FF culture from gets his media from Josh's frogs. I took the pictures before I put in the food and water. They are already messing it up so I doubt I'll keep them set up this way. I was more or less just testing it out...

Milkweed bug (Oncopeltus fasciatus) as feeders?

Have you noticed any peculiar odors from your colony. I set mine up on Tuesday and I have noticed a slight chemical smell that has been getting stronger. Its not unpleasant but if I leave my door open it fills the entire apartment pretty quickly. I can't be sure it's coming from them because...

Stick insects as good praying mantis feeders?

If anyone ever comes across an abundance of native phasmids I would gladly pay you to collect some of them for me. I've been looking for some for my bug shows for a while now with no success. As for feeders I'd like to try the green banana roaches but climbing and flying are are two of my deal...

Anyone else culture Waxworms for moths?

Nice writeup, and the other step by step one as well. I'm going to try this but my biggest concern is the meal moths that have infested my bug room (and the rest of my house I'm afraid) They are so tiny they can get into the smallest of cracks so I would be worried that even with the latches...

Baby vinegaroons: My experience with them so far.

Pets by all means. I've always found them fascinating but at shows they were always so expensive (IMO) for WC adults that I never took a chance on them. The wholesaler had them for a great price and I bought all he had (now the ones he gets are twice as much, more in line with the shows) A...

Baby vinegaroons: My experience with them so far.

Information on the rearing of baby vinegaroons is scarce and with some prompting by Orin I have decided to share my experiences. This is by no means a scientific account of what I have experienced and many of the figures and dates given are estimates though they are pretty close. Some of the...

    Homemade Dry Cricket Feed

Very Interesting method, seems like a bit of work initially but but once the rice is sprayed and dried its simple. Should store pretty easily as well. Thanks for the tip on dehydrating. I know I could borrow my buddy's dehydrator but this would save the trouble.

    Homemade Dry Cricket Feed

I've got a friend who make fish food and he is constantly researching nutritional requirements of different fish and the nutritional values of different foods. For example, he uses duck eggs instead of chicken eggs because duck eggs have twice as much nutritional value so he doesn't have to use...

North American Reptile breeders Conference *v* Tinley Park, IL

I'll be there with a table on the perimeter somewhere. When locations are available I'll let you know. I'd love to talk Mantids. Last year someone had some rhinoceros beetle larvae that I was very tempted to buy but I didn't know enough about them and they seemed a bit spendy ($30.00 I think)...
