    Males not aggressive?

Update - he's doing the thing I said above but much more extreme, what should I do? Should I let him go?  Another update - he laid upside down with his wings motionless but still fluttering. I think his time has come, sadly!

    Males not aggressive?

Well now he seems to just run around his enclosure with his wings unfolded and smack at the glass. I offered a roach to him but I don't think he paid it attention - maybe this is him wanting to mate?

    Males not aggressive?

Must be weird. My Chinese male ATTACK ANYTHING IT SEES, even me! I'm here sitting at my PC typing this right now as he stares at my fingers from his cage smacking the walls of it as if he wanted to grab and eat it. His appetite and aggression is by far the most apparent I've ever seen in any...

How long does it usually take to receive a mantis you ordered?

Depends. For me it took well over a month due to heat issues, but as it stands now, a week or two is my guess.

    Bit of an update!

I honestly thought it wasn't poop, but rather.. well, the things male mantids give to females to fertilize their eggs! Anywho, regardless of what it was, he's not been acting weirdly or anything and hasn't done it since! Also, is it a good or bad idea to have the mantids just stare at each other...

Male mantids: Disappointment or equally as fun as females?

Chinese mantids aren't native to where I live, so I can't release my male. I ordered an African mantis and specifically told the breeder to make sure she sent me a female, but so much time has passed with waiting for the weather to cool a bit and apparently the female that I was supposed to get...

Male mantids: Disappointment or equally as fun as females?

Wanted to propose some discussion on this topic: We all know that male mantids live much less longer than females, are smaller than females, often fly around if you let them out of their enclosures, and behave a bit differently than females. For example, my adult male Chinese Mantis when I...

    Bit of an update!

Pat. Oddly enough it shipped the same day as this thread was posted!   Also, do you have any idea what that substance could be?

    Bit of an update!

Nothing bad of course! Well, neutral at worst. Anyway, both of my mantids are doing well. Here's a picture of them, they like to go near each other and stare at each other from within each other enclosures. The Male tried to whack his arms but obviously it didn't do anything. All they do is...

What species does it look like/could be?

    This heat is pretty lame

My last mantis arrived sometime in early june, I recall that as well. How long do you think we'll have to wait?

    Do you name your mantises?

I always name my male mantids Earl followed my numbers since a friend of mine tells me to. Right now, I have an Earl the 2nd. Earl the first was around back in the 2013 days.

    Before and after?

Took a pic of Earl after he just arrived on the 27th of june. He was either L4 or L3, I believe. Yesterday on the 14th of August, his wings came in! Now: Pretty unfortunate how the mantis he arrived with perished in a mismolt... I think it was another male though, judging from its...

How often do male mantids eat as adults anyway?

My chinese mantid just had his final molt and his wings came in (molt went perfectly, wings are drying out as of this message!) and I want to know how feeding him will be. As some may know I had two chinese mantids to begin with but one perished due to a mismolt. With this in mind, he will not...

    This heat is pretty lame

Ordered a mantis like a week ago and it still hasn't shipped. ? Anyone else a bit annoyed by the weather? lol  To keep on track: Mantis has really bulgy wing things, think he's about to molt?

    Is this true?

Read up on some info coming to a wiki article that claims Chinese Mantids can live longer if they eat pollen. Is this true, and is their only way of "eating pollen" by eating bees?

    Aggressive female

Dunno, my male attacks anything I put in his cage. He's a bloodthirsty, but also skittish guy.

    Iris Oratoria?

Come to think of it, I remember giving it a cricket that wasn't moving very much... maybe that was the nail in the coffin. As for the species of mantis, I. Oratoria seems super weird to me in the sense tht they don't act like other mantids. They're a lot more skittish as well and very quick to...

    What's on the menu?

Anything I find outside really. Lately I've been feeding them crickets, roaches, and when all hope is lost, Skipper butterflies, but during earlier Instars, I'd catch various flies. I believe I fed one of my mantids a small scorpion once - that was quite awesome. But I feel kind of guilty...

    African mantids

Things like S.Aurea are in my interest. Are they similar to Chinese mantids and Heirodulas for how they treat prey; actively chasing it overall being very aggressive? Also, do they get similarly sized to Heirodulas and Chinese mantids? Thanks for the answers, that's all I really want to know...
