This picture isn't good for the abdominal segment method because this isn't the underside of the abdomen. Couldn't get any pics of the underside because the glass would just flare back at my cam's flash and I obviously can't pick him/her up right now because he/she will molt very soon, so we'll...

Abdominal segments are a bit weird - it looks as if there are about 6, but then again, he/she could be at an instar where sexing isn't exactly the easiest thing to do. I also know that with males, antenna tend to be much longer and thick, but his/her antenna seems to be slightly in the middle...

How big is your Chinese mantis? Mine currently is about two inches or so. I suspect when it molts next, it'll be a sub adult.

Iris Oratoria 100000%. I live in Vegas too and have seen them over and over. 

Thing is, I fed another mantis I had the exact same crickets and that mantis ended up fine. And yeah, they're native to my city, so finding them is pretty easy. They don't behave like most other mantids as far as I've seen. Have you had one? 

What do you guys think about this species? My most recent interaction with one didn't end well - she was an aggressive feeder and her life was going perfectly fine until one day I found her hung upside down (like normal) but with her abdomen downwards with some blackish stains... in it? or on...

He molted about ~27 hours ago as of this message. Also, he's still a teeny boy, so what type of prey would you recommend me catching and doing this to? Maybe I could catch a small fly outside but cutting them in half would be difficult. However, I guess I could just shake the bottle I catch...

Update: I don't think he's going to make it. He absolutely refuses food and barely moves around... quite sad honestly, I don't know what else to do. 

Not really, no. But he can still hang upside down. What types if food should I offer him? Normal flies and such?

Currently three. Two chinese nymphs and this other random green mantis I found outside when I was looking for feeders for the nymphs. Hopefully it's smooth sailing!

The idea of owning communal mantids is quite nice. If you get a large enough enclosure, you could probably put three ghosts in there; can't imagine how fun it'd be! That being said, I've heard that they are not 100% communal (more like 99%?) so you'd probably have to keep them well fed. 

Very recently did they get shipped out. Shouldn't be too long!
