    Nymph *** Confirmation

God dangit, I got bamboozled again, didn’t I? My D lobata’s pronotum has completely changed shape during the most recent molt, and is looking decidedly more female to me now. Additionally, the abdomen has always appeared very pointed to me, with smaller segments at the tip, but now I’m seeing a...

    Red Rhombodera

That is extremely cool... anyone know the exact species, or is this just a color variant? It would be a shame for them to lose that coloration as they mature, but I can't find any pictures of adults.

    Hello there

    Welcome, Kevin!

    Idolomantis bone dry molt

I'd like to know this as well. My thought was to keep a heating pad underneath and a heating pad on top connected to a thermostat probe near the top of the enclosure, but I fear the heat at the top will still get dangerous when the lamp is on, or that the probe itself will absorb too much heat...

    Surprise New Mantids

Congrats on the surprise additions! I don't have any experience with them (their care intimidates me), but the more and more I read, it seems as though their humidity requirements are actually fairly low due to the region they're from and the season in which they hatch/mature.

    Poor ghost!

I had a similar occurrence of ghost cannibalism (about an hour after a feeding, rather than after a molt) that also resulted in death despite appearing to be well on the road to recovery. It sucks, no matter the circumstances. Sorry for your loss!

    She’s laying an ooth!!

    Congrats on the ooth!

anyone have an example of a homemade enclosure for large mantids?

I don't have any pictures of it, and I haven't actually used them yet, but I've gathered a few of those big containers of bargain cheese balls you can get at the grocery store. They're super cheap, and if you've got kids the container will be empty in no time (whether you like it or not). I...

    Success !

Congrats! I'm always on the edge of my seat when I know a molt is happening or happening soon.

Thank you both. Am I more or less correct with IDing based on the crest, or are there other significant indicators I’m not familiar with?

    Maple & Pancakes

Maple, the Malaysian Dead Leaf (Deroplatys lobata) ... and Pancakes, the Giant Shield (Rhombodera megaera)

    Nymph *** Confirmation

Sorry to bring back an old thread, but it seemed cleaner than starting a new one for the same topic. I've got a couple more that I simply don't know enough to ***. They're dark enough colors that counting segments is very difficult (plus even at L4 the ghosts are tiny). I understand that the...

Food names seem nice and gender neutral ?  I also have Maple, Sausage, Strudel, Waffles, and Whiskey.

    Congrats on the hatching!

    Hygrometer

@Synapze Where in the world did you find a lot of 5 for that cheap? ? I've had my eye on a 5-pack of digitals for about twice that amount, but I've been hesitant to pull the trigger.

    Favorite species?

This is hard to say, for the reasons others have said, but if I had to pick a favorite among my current specimens, I'd have to say my Deroplatys lobata is probably my favorite. He/she is fearless, and active in hunting food (plus great taking hand feeding), and looks more amazing with every...

    Delayed Molting Due to Injury

Unfortunately, this one died last night. After so long still being active and eating I didn't really think it was sick, but I guess it was. Luckily, the other 3 are still doing great, and are happily accepting small houseflies at L4.

    Delayed Molting Due to Injury

I seem to be observing this a nymph delaying a molt due to injury, but as my control group is pretty small, and my experience is extremely limited, I figured I'd just ask if others can confirm this. I would assume this is done due to the extra energy required to heal/regenerate the damaged body...

    Curious Posture

I wasn't really worried, but good to hear all the same ? I hadn't seen this with any of my ghosts or my giant shield, so was mainly curious if it was like a pre-molting stretching or something I've simply missed before. It's definitely interesting. Maple is also much more active with the mimicry...
