    questions about locusts

check this pic out. one started tunneling next to the glass on the my side so i could see what was happening. you can see how much her abdomen extends :o its got a sort of opening tunneling device on the tip which rasps away at the sand, and compacts it the side as it moves down the tunnel...

    questions about locusts

hi thanks for replying; guess you are right, they just needed time. i saw 3 females laying eggs (hopefully) last night which suprised me as i thought they were diurnal. now i just hope the temps are high enough for development as its a bit low, low down where it is now, if i can move the jar...

    questions about locusts

hi. looking for advice from someone who keeps locusts. my colony of 25 adult desert locusts have matured at last and theres been quite a bit of mating going on, but the mated females are showing no interested in the big vase of damp sand i provided. i thought they were supposed to lay their eggs...

    Gongylus Gongliodes

to be (not particularly) controversial i would expect one pair from two bought mantises, esp higher instars. the seller should get out his/her damn magnifying glass (inverted binoculars are best) to check the *** after accepting good money :P . only takes a few moments and isnt difficult...

    harlequin ladybird

i think theres a cluster of 20 hibernating in the shed here which i thought looked different to the normal big ones. havnt seen any normal ones for a while come to think of it. ah well, they might be pests but at least they have the decency to come in a wide variety of pretty patterns :P...

    Using heat lights...

i wouldnt worry insects evolved filters and stuff to cope with solar radiation about 300 million years ago, or they couldnt function. and the suns a tiny bit brighter than a lamp :P

i had some probelms making cultures

its annoying the little beggers crawl up the side isnt it. im always concerned when they dry out up there, not escape. two weeks ago i made a GIANT culture in a big sweety container using 100's of flies. i just used 4 boiled up apples and suger with a bit of yeast. 'millions' of maggots, and...

    idolomantis flapping its wings

yeh be careful as their claws are pretty delicate and easily lose the ability to grip [ thats why mine died]. might stop him behaving normally with the female. i should try to discourage him from moving about as much as possible just in case. hope he lives long enough to sire a new brood of baby...

    idolomantis flapping its wings

think so. my #9 mantis used to do that, must be what that family of mantis does before taking off. so does it fly around your room. :P

    Sunburst Diving Beetles (56k warning)

i used to keep the british 'great diving' beetles, dytiscus marginalis. they are the most entertaining insects ive ever kept, (next to mantis and dragonfly larvae) watching them hunt tadpoles is awesome. we used to go look for them in the stream, and they were rare enough to be quite a find...
