    Feeder Roaches vs Household roaches

I've been told by my family that I can't order roaches as food because my family doesn't want any escaped roaches. I was wondering how similar feeder roaches are to the types of roaches that you might find in a dirty home. The roaches that I found in a dirty apartment seemed to be bigger and...

    How do mantises bite?

I'm having a boring day at work today, and I've been looking at the little Blue flash I brought in who is sitting on my desk. So it got me thinking, how do mantises bite down hard enough to go through a beetle's exoskeleton? Is the main force applied from the top and bottom palate, similar to...

    Fake addy scam

How/where did you hear of this happening in regard to mantis shipping? I don't see any recent Breeder Feedback where this happened- is it through Ebay or some other venue?

    Concerned!

Hi Vee! I'm glad to hear your issue is resolved. We were having a discussion about eye spots several days ago here: http://mantidforum.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=21309 in case you ever have black dots like that again that aren't dirt. Mike

    GreenOasis

I ordered from Carey a third time, and was incredibly pleased with it again. There was a technical difficulty, that shipping boxes had not arrived from the supplier in time for her to send the order out the day after I placed my order, and she immediately notified me and keep in contact with me...

    RIP Monkey Face

I'm really curious about this eye thing because it seems my green shield now has brown eyes. That, to me, means that she's probably rubbing as you say. Do we know if it's direct rubbing of the eye on the plastic or is it a component found in plastic that is toxic and causing the eye to turn...

    RIP Monkey Face

What's the deal here with her eyes? Is there something wrong with them being black that comes about because of a plastic enclosure?

    Unidentified caterpillar

Thanks for the help guys, it's definitely a cutworm. I like your idea philinyuma, I think a moth or something like that would be better than a caterpillar for food, especially since the 'pillar doesn't move fast enough to make these mantises excited.

    Unidentified caterpillar

Anyone know what this is? I found it under a tree stump today while cutting wood and I want to know if I should feed it to my mantis right away, or see what it turns out to be after metamorphosis and feed it to her then. Any votes? It looks like a juicy caterpillar or larvae now, but it could...

Bring your mantis to college day!

I bring mine to laboratory each day. They sit on my desk, and then when it's feeding time each day at 3 pm, myself and 4 others go into the conference to watch my mantids eat.

    mantid business model

I saw an interesting post and it has gotten me to think about the way that people profit from the mantis hobby (from what I have seen so far, I don't think I could classify as the mantis industry), and I wanted to discuss this business model. The idea is that one asks politely for mantids of an...

    Eating after molting

I love this idea! She was placed behind the fan of my computer with a tiny cricket in the cage. Two hours later, her cage was steamy warm, and I can't find the cricket!!!!! (ok, I'm hoping it didn't get out somehow). Thanks for the good idea!

    Eating after molting

update: My other mantis was back to eating within 24 hours of molting, but this one that molted last friday still hasn't eaten, and doesn't show any interest in it either. Temperature is up a few degrees, but I don't have lamps or heating elements until the weekend to really get the temperature...

My virus! 5 weeks and counting....

Oh shingles! That's caused by a herpes virus, you'll never get sterile immunity from that. Once you have chicken pox as a kid, you've got the herpes zoster virus for life. Later on in life it will recrudesce (reactivate later in life after being latent) as the disease shingles. Your best bet...

    Eating after molting

I was just reading the care page on mantisplace.com and I think I found my problem: Boston has been at like 50 degrees for the past week, and I need to keep the temperature up in the 70's for this little girl to eat and be active. Now I just need to find a way to heat her aquarium.... Thanks...
