Praying Mantis Kid's book- pictures needed!

You can always ask. It would generally be called a Sponsorship Agreement, where the company would pay $X per book sold or a flat fee. It happens in many types of media, but most larger companies are unwilling to deal with unknown people. You could always send an email to see if they would be...

Praying Mantis Kid's book- pictures needed!

When I used to do Youtube as a part-time job it was a constant problem. If 10 seconds of a song played on the radio in the background of a video, you would lose monetization rights. Many channels got shut down due to copyright strikes. The other option is to find images that give permission on...

    Eye Rub

So I have noticed black spots on my mantises eyes (not the pseudopupils). He is an adult h. majuscula. The next day I caught him hanging onto the wall of the enclosure rubbing his face in the dirt. I have never seen any behavior like that. He is fed regularly, and has been otherwise healthy. Any...

Praying Mantis Kid's book- pictures needed!

I can try to get some of green banana roaches and isopods. Isopods aren't a common feeder but my mantises seem to like them. Green banana roaches also aren't super popular but my mantises love them and they are more attractive, so more fun to keep. Let me know if you would like either. Be...

    Feeding spiny flower nymphs Pinheads??

Crickets are fine, but can be dangerous if left unattended. We always use crickets when we are between fly shipments. We put a cricket near the mantis on the lid (turned rightside up) and let them catch it. If the mantis doesn't eat it while we are monitoring, the cricket is removed so there is...

    Promoting limb regeneration

Very interesting thought. I don't know the answer. I know shrimp can have issues molting if they do not have enough calcium in the water and diet. The calcium is needed to generate the new exoskeleton. I would guess that a calcium deficiency would have similar results in mantises. Some websites...

    intelligence and live hobbies??

I doubt there have been any studies done on this specific topic, but many studies have been done when it comes to neuroplasticity and musical instruments, second languages, painting, etc. The general consensus is that doing those sorts of activities helps increase or maintain neuroplasticity...

    Cats and Mantids

Yeah, its locked down very tight. We have a custom CNC cage to give them more room (about 6"x2.5" I think). The lid is steel shelving, so far heavier than the cat could lift, and it can't be pushed out of the way unless 8 tie-downs are undone. The guinea pigs are my wife's closest pets and the...

    Cats and Mantids

Me too. They have good latches. We spent a good amount of time yesterday moving all of the little guys into my office, which is always closed to the cat. The shrimp and fish are still out, but at low risk since they are in heavy tanks with lids. The cat has been introduced to the guinea pigs...

    Cats and Mantids

Well, we had our first incident this morning. Went to take a shower and when I got back to the living room, the cockroach enclosures were laying upside down on the kitchen floor. He must have heard them moving and pulled the bins out. Luckily they are airtight bins, so no casualties and no...

    Surprise isopod family

Much of their diet will be decaying wood and leaves. If you want to supplement their food, you can do so using fish food. They don't eat much, especially if you only have 4. I have my dwarf white culture and giant canyon both set up to use a good substrate with bark, leaves, moss, peat, etc...

    Cats and Mantids

Thanks for the insight. Our cat is pretty nice, a 1.5yr male tabby. Within 10 minutes of getting him home from the shelter he was on his back asking for belly rubs. Very friendly and loving. Its a little complicated keeping the predator and the prey in the same house, but I think we will manage.

    Cats and Mantids

So, it seems that our zoo of a house keeps growing. We got a cat a week ago. This is our first animal that is permitted to roam freely. Now we have: Our new cat, Douglas. Three guinea pigs. A 2.5g Aquarium with nerite snails, some crystal red shrimp and amano shrimp. A 7g aquarium with...

    Does anyone use dubia rouches

Yes dubias are our staple backup food for when we don't have flies. We feed them whole. They like to burrow in substrate so we feed them out on a smooth surface where they cannot hide and where the mantis can easily grab them. The main problem is that they quickly become too large to feed most...

    Humidity vs Ventilation conflict

To answer re springtails. Their numbers fluctuate with the food available (mold). When mold spikes, they are all over, then they level out to a moderate level. I have not heard of them infesting a habitat uncontrolled. Just make sure you aren't adding things that create excess mold.

    Ohaple's Vivarium Setups

I do feel very fortunate. I have the best of both worlds. They are my father's machines, but I can come over whenever I want on weekends to use them. Laser cutters and CNC machines aren't as expensive as many people think. We use them to make custom knife scales to sell, custom gifts for family...

    Temperature probe behind sytrofoam?

I wouldn't want it back there. Styrofoam insulates, so if you are heating the enclosure it will read closer to your room temp than the enclosure temp. For humidity, I can't imagine it would be accurate either. Maybe you can cut a small 1" hole in the foam to expose the sensor to the main enclosure?

    Humidity vs Ventilation conflict

I don't have definite answers for you, but some suggestions. Move the heat mat to the back wall if possible. It will help give the mantis more heat and reduce the evaporation spikes you have dealt with. Add a substrate that holds water well. Make it deeper than you think you should. Get the...
