    Autocannibalism?

If its l5 or l6, it may be able to grow back. I would move them to a different area of the house. I'm not saying this is the case, but maybe where you have them gets too many disruptions, too much cold air, too dry, carbon monoxide leak, or some other external factor. Move them to a bedroom or...

    Autocannibalism?

I haven't read of such autocannibalism in mantids. From my understanding, autocannibalism is very rare in nature since it defeats the purpose of self preservation. A mantis leg is not much sustenance to risk a major injury and lifelong (if adult) handicap. It is more likely the result of an...

    Combined Feeder/Cleaner/Plant Cutting Culture

A little update in case anyone is interested in duplicating. We found a couple dead adult banana roaches on the floor by the mantis shelf, meaning they found a way to escape through the thin gap in the lid. That is unnaceptable, since we are not interested in finding dead roaches around the...

    When is enough actually enough?

We only have a few. Three ghosts, an H. Majuscula, and a peacock. I apply the same rules to all "collections." From Judge John Hodgman. "The difference between a hoarder and a collector is a display case." If you are thoughtful about how you display and organize things, a large collection is...

    Non-Mantis related hobbies

All good knives. The Endura is longer than I like to use due to our local carry restrictions, but it is a great knife. The cold steel series are also well-respected though I don't have any myself.

    Non-Mantis related hobbies

Which one, if you don't mind me asking? I collect them. My folding knife collection is up to about 65-70, half of which are Spyderco.

    Non-Mantis related hobbies

I do have a little side business selling custom knife scales, but the actual metalwork and speaker design takes too much time to be profitable for me. Though you just gave me a thought; I need to make myself a set of mantis scales. I have made scales for Overwatch, Destiny, fishing, and other...

    Non-Mantis related hobbies

I like to do other DIY hobbies and gaming. For gaming I used to play COD and Halo pretty competitively. Since getting more settled into work etc, I have been playing Overwatch. Our latest DIY hobbies have been custom knives and custom hifi speakers. Here are a couple pictures of what we made.

Are All These Mantids Good for Begginers?

Thats a cool variety of species. I only have experience with ghosts out of that list. Remember to include heating supplies to your shopping list if you are going to get thistle mantises. Most care sheets I have seen require mid 80s. The other ones you are getting would benefit from being kept...

Are All These Mantids Good for Begginers?

THIS!! My H. Majuscula was probably from the same ooth as her current stock. He is sub adult. He is the most interesting and dynamic of all of our mantids. He readily takes food, and is happy to be handled. Patty has been great to work with. We also get our feeders from her and her pricing seems...

Are All These Mantids Good for Begginers?

1 stick per is fine for most species. They usually use the lid anyways. For outside sticks some people recommend sterilizing in the oven. Other people just risk it and use sticks from outside. We sterilized ours for peace of mind.

Are All These Mantids Good for Begginers?

Looks like a good list generally but here are a few things I learned when starting that you might find helpful: This hobby is stupid cheap if you stay with deli containers and cheese puff containers, but can get expensive fast when you start to do upgrades. Lighting, timers, heaters, different...

    Feeding supplies ran out

If you need the supplies quickly, many people will attract house flies using fish, or will buy crickets at the bigbox pets stores long enough to get the real food shipment in. Reptile stores usually have dubias as well even though they are a bit more expensive. Mantids generally will eat...

    Peacock Mantis time between molts?

Ours is still a rather picky eater. You may need to experiment with different types of prey. Ours will almost never eat crawling prey like worms and roaches. He seems to prefer house flies, but even then the fly must line up in the exact perfect position and then wait several seconds for him to...

    Pseudopupils and Anthropomorphism

Good points, their general physiology is much more humanoid than other insects. I love their laser focus when they spot prey.

    Pseudopupils and Anthropomorphism

I agree. I don't seem to notice the same effect with my little ghost nymphs even though I cannot see their pseudopupils. Maybe it is because their eyes look more proportional to their body? Thanks! It is probably my favorite photo so far of my mantids.

    Pseudopupils and Anthropomorphism

Nice! She looks like she is about to invade my planet and abduct my cows. :) With the psuedopupils, the mouthparts almost look like they form a smile, but without, they look more menacing.

    Hierodula Mem enclosure

Depends how much you fill with substrate. Generally it is recommended that the enclosure is minimum 3x the mantis' length in height and minimum 2x in depth and width. If you end up with a 4" adult, you would need at least 12x8x8. I think this will be a good size for your mantis, and with the...

    Pseudopupils and Anthropomorphism

Took a nice photo of Carl, our sub-adult H. Majuscula. He appeared to have a curious look, almost like he was begging. I had the thought that much of this anthropomorphism (applying human traits or emotions to non-humans) we sometimes apply might be from the pseudopupil (the dark spot on mantids...
