    Help for my cousin?

What's up guys? My cousin and I went to a local reptile expo today (I got a new poison dart frog by the way. Totally awesome!) and we bought a young mantis for my other cousin. She has a lot of questions about her knew mantis and I actually gave her a link to this forum so she might just join...

    Cousin's new critter

Hi guys! I thought you might like to see the new pride and joy my cousin just got. We're both extreme terrarium nuts and we went to a reptile expo earlier today to look at the huge variety of reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates. This is actually the same expo I got my mantis, Lee, from a...

    Tarantulas

Thanks TrentMT! I don't remember exactly which tank it is off the top of my head but it's actually part of a series of tanks either made by or with the help of National geographic and what's really great about them I learned is that part of the price you spend on them goes to help conserve wild...

    Wings!

That's good to know. Still I don't know if I'd risk it with Lee though I might try it in future. That is if I can find one of each gender.

    Wings!

That's a good point. I've read that male giant Asian mantises stay smaller in the 3 inch range while females approach 6. I guess it would make sense in that case that a smaller male would also not bulk up nearly as much and would mature earlier.

    Wings!

Yeah that looks similar to mine. I just checked and it looks like there's at least 7 segments, possibly an eighth but it was hard to make out plus the wings are long. It looks like Lee might be a guy. If that's the case the only downside is I was hoping to possibly breed eventually and continue...

    Wings!

Thanks River Dane! I'm for sure going to get a look at the underside of the abdomen tomorrow. I actually just read a little while ago that females usually have 6 abdominal segments and males have about 8 so I'm really looking forward to checking for sure. Now that she's matured I hope she still...

    Wings!

Hiya guys! Lee has molted for the 2nd time since I've had her and her wings have finally come in! I was expecting the wing buds from her last molt to be a bit larger and more obvious but her wings to have come in fully and it blows my mind! That and once again she seems to have doubled in size...

    I certainly will!

    Coming along well.

Thanks Mantisgirl13! I'm really looking forward to when her wings fully come in! :)

    Molting signs

That's going to be awesome! Can't wait to see that when she grows older!

Good to know! Thank's Little Mantis!

    Molting signs

Thanks Velve! That's amazing! I can see the difference very clearly and I will be on the lookout for that posture over the next few days. I also had no idea their eyes darken at night and I have to say that's pretty awesome! :)

    Molting signs

Heya guys! I was wondering if there are any telltale signs that a mantis is about to molt other than the fact that their appetite slows down? It just so happens that Lee's abdomen was already pretty large and as she's young I figured she would be molting often and was surprised how quickly she...

    Coming along well.

Hey guys! Sorry they're so late but here's some recent pictures from today of her after her last molt like I promised!

    Flies

Oh yeah I only give her lively, healthy looking crickets, never anything sluggish, dying or suspicious looking and I very closely watch to make sure nothing goes wrong. If she clearly sees it but shows no interest I take it out and if she molts I'll give her something soft and harmless like a...

    Flies

That's pretty much the way I look at it anyway. Even containers of captive bred crickets can get pretty disgusting after all and must be filled with bacteria and parasites. Haven't seen anybody in my collection get sick so far.

    Flies

That's an interesting idea! I had no clue they could eat anything other than insect/meat based food.
