Need 3rd enclosure & who should go where

the 8x8x12 would be kind of small for an adult Hierodula, especially if you're going to fully substrate/plant it. They are perfect for ghosts and orchids. You won't regret the 12x12x18 as you have a lot more space to work with and can put cool plants in them... they're much better for Hierodula...

Thanks for the kind words all! Yeah, not a chance! I tried to pick the most chill one of the 6 to photograph. There's one in particular I've had to name Barry Allen because he is NEVER standing still whenever I see him (and he immediately zooms out of the deli cup when I open them to feed or mist).

Had some fun with my ghosts today. I got one of those cheapy macro lenses for my phone so I tried for some proper photos. They didn't turn out half bad considering it's just a galaxy S6 phone camera...some post processing in photoshop  Freshly molted male: And one of the L2 babies (so cute):

    Pet store feeder woes

I've gotten fruitflies a couple times from my local petco. Mine must be an exception, all their stuff is usually pretty clean and healthy (animals and feeders alike). They also have a few nice plants/moss usually too. I like going there even though it's infrequent..

    MantisKingdom/DeShawn

Just got my box of little tiny Ghosts today! I could not be more pleased. We're having some swell ~10 degree weather here in Buffalo and the little guys would never know, they were extremely well insulated with thick Styrofoam and a heat pack. Everyone arrived safe, well fed looking and...

    New Enclosure

You can do either or both, whatever you like more aesthetically... You can buy leaf litter on most sites that sell substrate, bugincyberspace, josh's frogs, etc. you can also sterilize your own if you happen to have hardwood trees around but be careful that they wouldn't be near a place where...

    New Enclosure

Super easy, just keep the substrate slightly damp for them and maybe add a couple of dead leaf litter for them to eat (or you can use some pieces cooked rice or dry dog/cat food). They will eat discarded mantis food and most importantly they keep mold in check. Isopods also fill the same role...

    Mismolt :( need help

She had gotten stuck half-way out so her legs and half her abdomen were getting pinched.... I tried to help free her but it broke the old skin where they usually hang by the butt from... Maybe I should not have done anything, I don't know. It felt like I was damned if I do, damned if I don't...

    Mismolt :( need help

She didn't make it :/ I was too bummed to even post anything last night. I spent all day and part of the night yesterday trying to help her stay on the tongs and she just gradually lost strength/got worse. Her front half seemed nearly completely limp/paralyzed and she ended up losing half a leg...

    Heat Lamp Setup

I use a halogen light for low wattage heat/ bask spot.. they get VERY hot close to the bulb so you need to have them mounted a few inches above the screen. The zilla lamp comes with hook-springs and metal feet you can screw in to achieve this luckily. ( my setup for it)

    Mismolt :( need help

I tried to give her a drop of honey... she's having trouble keeping hold of the tongs and seems pretty weak. She doesnt seem to be able to move her front half much, if at all (especially her forelimbs- they are just completely limp). I am gonna keep helping her keep hold of the tongs and hope...

    Mismolt :( need help

This morning I woke up to find Sunny trying to molt and she seemed to have gotten stuck in her skin on the way out (her abdomen was looking noticeably pinched) so I waited about 10 minutes and when she's made no progress herself I started getting really worried, so I tried to help her out of...

    rant's photos

Got some fresh pictures today of my little dudes, thought I'd start myself a thread~ My "golden" H.Membranacea that has since turned from a neon yellow when I got her to a neon green color with "burnt" edges and legs. She's molted 3 times since I got her about a month and a half ago. And my...

    Exo Terra Size

They do have a woven metal screen top so if you want to be safe you can cover it up or replace it (I too read that mantis can get their feet stuck/torn off in it)...  There's a bunch of different materials you can use/improvise with, you don't have to tear out the screen either. You can just hot...

    Exo Terra Size

I wouldn't get the 8x8x8, since the 8x8x12's are pretty much the same price. That way it can be flexible. But yea in my experience the 8x8x12 will be fine for the smaller species and the big ones 12x12x18. I stopped by petco a couple weeks ago and the guy there told me they usually put exoterra...

My nano-viv and small viv (update!)

Thanks! And you totally should...when I had reptiles I kept them with fake plants and I can say it is just a whole different world having real plants and a mini-ecosystem in there. Plus you just can't beat the beauty- these were my first go at making them and I learned a whole lot. They are...

What a cool idea, that setup looks great! The tiny steps on the left ledge really sell it for me.
