    Temperature

I've had a reasonably good experience with these little hygrometer/temp measuring things. Got 2 of them and they show the same readings within ~5% of each other. They are super small too, I love them. You can stick them inside the enclosure by cutting a small command strip in half.

    Orthoporus texicolens (and a bumblebee)

There actually already is, H.Membranacea in the big tank and a ghost in the small one... just didn't get pics of them today

    Orthoporus texicolens (and a bumblebee)

Just got a few of these guys to live in the bottom of my mantis vivariums. They are AWESOME! But no one else in my family thinks so, so I wanted to show someone :*( Anyway here's some pics. I have 2 O.Texicolens and 2 bumblebees in the 12x12x18 and 6 bumblebees in my 8x8x12. I am re-scaping my...

    Terrarium size

I believe for flies it goes Stable>House>BB for size (smallest to largest).

    Terrarium size

Those get 2.7~inches long right? 3x would be about 8.1 inches so yeah it will be good (especially for males since they are smaller). Just gotta be careful not to put in too much substrate

    Terrarium size

8x8x8 is probably too small for big mantis species (or it would be cramped at least I think). Also depends on how much substrate and "stuff" you put in them. A lightly decorated 8x8x12 with very little substrate would probably be fine. But if you're like me and want to cram plants and wood and...

    Millipedes?

bwaha, no problem. I would actually be a little worried if a mantis DID somehow manage to start munching on one as they secrete defensive chemicals when threatened... not sure how much damage that could potentially do to a mantis but I'm hoping I will never find out.

    Millipedes?

Awesome to hear- I ordered a couple of bumblebees for my small viv and 2 Orthoporus texicolens for the large one. Should be a lot of fun!

    Millipedes?

Has anyone ever had their mantis interact with a millipede before? Do they eat/hunt them? I have a 12x12x18 vivarium and I was musing the idea that it might be cool do get a couple of small millipedes to coexist/live in the bottom of the tank but I'm not sure if they would just get eaten or not...

    Disaster.

So sorry for your losses, that sucks :(  I'm headed on my yearly pilgrimage back home next month and will be gone for 7 days so this post makes me nervous... wish you all the best in recuperating your collection.

    Ghosts kind of macro eating

Those are really cool shots! Absolutely love macro photography.

    What's your least favorite insect?

I'm with you there, I have a phobia of crickets/grasshoppers. And Beetles. They jump and fly and are really unpredictable.... Though ironically I have a pet angel wing katydid right now because she was camped outside my door for 4 days straight seemingly begging to be saved from the impending...

    Hello!

Thanks everyone for the ID!  Yeah he does. It's mostly just the camera though, he's more dark/ dirt-colored brown like in the first photo. I heard they can change colors and become a bit green if they are kept in high humidity, which that viv is so I am curious to see what happens in through...

    Hello!

Hahah, for real?  Shows you much of a noob I am. :P  Here's another set of pictures with a different angle... the camera on my phone is not that great

    Hello!

Hi all, figured I should make a post here! My name is Amanda and I'm from upstate New York. I do 2D art for video games and I have an unhealthy obsession with critters/nature that I only recently just relapsed on after being without critters for about 6 years :P  before I had to move and give...

    Dying cricket/feeding dilemma

Definitely don't feed dying or sickly looking crickets. If you want to be extra safe keep the crickets for a few days of quarantine before feeding to any of your critters- many years ago I had bought a batch of crickets from petsmart for my leopard gecko and within ~2 days the entire batch of...

My nano-viv and small viv (update!)

That is my rough plan too, to use my future 12x12x18 for my big mantis. Out of curiosity, would you (or anyone here) consider putting more than 1 ghost in the 8x8x12? I was thinking it might be cool to have 2 or maybe even 3 next go round but not sure if its just too small for that. thank you...

My nano-viv and small viv (update!)

Update! So I've re-scaped my nano proper and also setup a small (12x12x18). I am really happy with how they came together so here's a couple update pics: 8x8x12 small mantid enclosure (I challenge you to spot my ghost mantis in this picture!): And the 12x12x18 large mantid enclosure... this...
