Ooth never hatched, but I got some cross section pictures

Infertile eggs will be clear with light yellow liquid inside and tend to dry up instead of turn black. If there were developing nymphs instead, they tend to turn black after they pass away. I opened one of my R. stalli oothecas that hatched smaller than I was expecting and found a lot of...

    Who likes Miomantis binotata?

Sorry I'm horrible with keeping up with threads. I checked a couple of my nymphs. They are younger than yours and they do have markings on each segment, though they are more brown and more well-defined than on the female pictured (aka they don't look like smudges). As for the discoloration on...

    Orchid Mantis

They'll become quite restless before laying. If you ever notice a female roaming around, she'll usually lay within a week. As for eating, I've never really noticed them not eating before laying. They do sometimes decide their food "doesn't taste good" and drop it for reasons I don't know of :P

    Adult hood Molt?

The only time interval she could've been helped was before her legs come out of the shed. Mantises usually shed head first, and then pull their raptorials out first (their raptorials will be lined vertically when they are being pulled out). If the raptorials are stuck in this step and their...

    Adult hood Molt?

Sorry I didn't mean to correct you, was just stating my own experience. There's a very delicate balance between maintaining high humidity and overmisting due to poor ventilation, my personal solution was just to not mist as much and I haven't had trouble with it. Fun thing about keeping mantises...

is there a care sheet for orchid mantis?

Honestly speaking, you can just follow the caresheet of any high humidity species and you'll be fine. My only suggestion is not to mist them everyday and adjust the frequency depending on how dry it is in your area. Misting too much just leads to stale wetness, mold, and bacterial buildup which...

    Possible case of parthenogenesis

There was a website which listed mantises by their families and genuses and had notes on their parthenogenic abilities O.o I wanted to check if there's any correlation between what I'm seeing and between known parthenogenic species but I can't find that darn list again.. :(

    Possible case of parthenogenesis

I can actually second that experience with multiple species. Out of two rhombodera stallis (one connected, the other had a male but didn't connect) only the mated female lay oothecas. The other female has been calling and looks as if she's about to explode but hasn't laid in 3-4 months. Same...

    Adult hood Molt?

She's stuck by her raptorials. During molting their thorax always stays straight, otherwise it will harden in an odd position and they won't be able to eat. Next time if a mantis looks like they are molting out of sequence, you'll need to manually intervene by gently pulling her raptorials out...

Platysil the female Deroplatys lobata reaches adulthood

Back when I bred mine I used the most traditional method. Place the male a couple inches behind the female, as close as he'll let you without freaking out in the next step. Then I poke the female gently just to make her move slightly. I noticed that the males are actually very visually oriented...

Platysil the female Deroplatys lobata reaches adulthood

A common place blemish with no solidly known cause or cure?

I've read that spots such as those can be caused due to rubbing. I've had a couple of my hierodula girls get similar spots after I procrastinated in upgrading their enclosure size, which means they may have rubbed against the mesh up top. It didn't affect them in any way I could notice though.

My fat mantis is leaking from her top side! Can I put aloe on her stretch marks?

Light brown goo? Mantis blood is green/light green, so unless it's greenish it's not blood.

Weird stuff on stick- ootheca attempts?

I have had a couple females that dabble. There's never any eggs inside actually so they won't hatch, but the females have stayed healthy, just won't produce any viable oothecas.

    Why does my face tingle...

To my knowledge, the white mites you find in fruitfly cultures are actually grain mites. They can come with the cultures but don't necessarily have to, they are in every household (though luckily we aren't aware of it). The substrate for fruit flies simply makes a very good breeding place for...

    Who likes Miomantis binotata?

Mine are quite aggressive hunters. I guess each individual is different : ) I don't compare my species, I like and keep them all ^^ They each are unique and beautiful in their own ways.

    Ants killed all my crickets!

Ant poison is a possibility, though the poison will kill whatever cultures the ants can get into as well. (Maybe ant traps?) Though I've had ants raid my fruit fly cultures because there were a couple points in the lid where they managed to chew holes into. I fixed the lids and they haven't...

    flies feeding

What flies are we talking about here? Fruit flies or larger flies like houseflies and blue bottle flies? For fruit flies there's no need to refrigerate them. Just give the lid a good tap or two, open the lid, tap on the bottom to get a couple flies out, tap again to make them fall back down and...
