    Mantis leg badly bent

Update, apparently he’s fine and he just chose to have his leg bent up for a couple hours, flailing around his raptorial leg while he tried to walk like some kind of long-winded joke— he’s a very good actor, I just say, haha!  You’d think mantids don’t do pranks, but I think Moriarty got me...

    Mantis leg badly bent

Ah, that’s a relief!! I was getting worried for Moriarty for a sec, I would’ve hated to see him get so messed up so soon.

    What’s my mantis doing?

Yeah, two topics in a short amount of time, but why is Sherlock just causally laying down on my finger??? I’ve never seen either do this before. A couple minutes later, he was back to running around aggressively again like he usually was.  was he just.. sleeping? Power-napping on my finger?

    Mantis leg badly bent

The foot on the raptorial leg of one of my mantises is bent up. He hunted effectively and he’s doing fine besides flailing the bent foot about while walking around. I’m not sure I can take a picture because of how small he still is, but the foot, instead of facing down, is facing up. What do you...

What should I feed my mantids?

:0! @MantisGirl13 I never thought about feeding my babs mealworms, I’ll look into it! Do you think they can handle it, though? I’m pretty sure both are L4 and they sit comfortably on my thumb, but as I’ve stated before they’ve got huge raptorial legs. I just caught a housefly and fed it to one...

What should I feed my mantids?

Good news! Both my mantids Sherlock and Moriarty have successfully shed twice and are holding up wonderfully. Bad news is that the fruit fly culture I’ve got is now DEFINITELY too small for their needs because of how big their raptorial legs have gotten— it seems that they don’t even pay much...

    Who molted?

I just witnessed one of my H. Majuscula nymphs Moriarty shed to L4! His last shed was the 7th of May, I think?  it was fascinating to watch, and really intriguing to see his color change so much. He doesn’t have the little stripe down his back anymore and the tips of his arms are starting to...

What’s the best way to feed fruit flies to mantids?

So I’ve got a fruit fly colony that I currently use to feed my mantids and my fish. What do y’all think is the best way to feed a mantis fruit flies?  What I do is shake a few into a bag and put my mantis in the bag so they can eat their fill, then take them out when they’ve eaten 3 or so fruit...

    First shed!!

AAA I’m so happy, one of them shed already!!! And the other seems to be starting on it.  I went to mist their enclosure and there it was, the shed clinging to the roof  I didn’t even know they were doing it or when it happened, but I’m just so happy!! I was so worried things would go wrong...

My mantises arrived!! + some questions

AAA I’m so happy, both of them arrived alive and well! Both of them are also very energetic. Please excuse the potato photos, my phone camera isn’t the best at catching things this small!  I had 16 ounce modified mason jars as enclosures prepared for both when they arrived, but now I realize I...

Excited new mantis family! (WA state)

Yo, welcome to the community! I’m pretty new myself, haha.  from what I’ve learned, the best enclosure for a mantis is twice the mantis’ length in width and three times the mantis’ length in height. I’ve heard ghost mantises tend to be around two inches, so the minimum you’d want to give an...

Hello from a new mantis keeper!!

Hi, my name’s Jasper! I’m an artist and an animal lover with a special soft spot to reptiles and insects. I’m very new to the mantis-keeping hobby— in fact, I haven’t ever had a mantis yet! My very first mantises will be with me in around two or three days, both Hierodula majuscula nympths that...
