Made a 2.5 gallon today with a drop-down style door instead of side hinged to maximize ventilation and viewable area.

Water is no friend to MDF, I would expect it to swell and crack pretty quickly from spraying the mantids. I'll defer to the more experienced keepers to suggest a safe sealant or paint.
I have used cork panel background in frog vivs and they hold up very well. I'm not sure that they will do anything to raise humidity on their own but they do not have mold or rot problems in wet environments. I believe Mike has been experimenting with cork for some mantids.
