Oxyothespis dumonti- North African Grass Mantis

Indeed. I sent 5 to bobericc before I could successfully sex them (say that 10 times..) and it looks like I kept all dudes, so yeah.. I PM-ed Yen, but his are only at L1 now, so they're about a month younger than mine.

Oxyothespis dumonti- North African Grass Mantis

They get So much longer with each molt. I like to look at their pointy heads with my new jeweler's loupe.

Sticks for sticks, could this be it?

I think that's a good observation. In the wild, the male has all the room in the world to escape should she try to eat him. Provide lots of places for him to hide and escape to so he feels safe should anything go awry.

    Petsmart

Ok, so I can go in and ask them to bag me some decent guys out of the bin instead of the boxed ones?

    Petsmart

I don't think anyone's started a thread for Petsmart yet that I can find... Anyway, I often go to Petsmart for feeders, sometimes against my better judgement. It's convenient for Hydei, when they're in stock, though the quality of the cultures varies. It's usually about $6 a vial. Those are...

    Native Stick Eggs Wanted

Wait. So people will ship exotic mantids all over the country (sometimes internationally) but not non-native phasmids?

    Orchid nymphs L1-L2

blast! Every time I see this thread in View New Content, I'm like "Ooh!" Then I remember this is not for sale/wanted nor a brand new topic. haha

    1/2 gallon fish bowl--L5 budwing

Yeah, I think it's important to provide a very grip-able top since they like to spend so much time on top upside down. Not providing that, you risk mis-molts. Some things I like to use are tulle that you can by in the wedding aisle at Michael's or plastic grid that I find in the knitting/cross...

Mantis ill.. should i do something?

That's good advice. My thought is that something is amiss with the crickets or even something they're eating.

    Oxyothespis dumonti ootheca

It looks like I kept All males! Do you have a female for me? Let me know if you need an L4 male.

Mantis ill.. should i do something?

    change the food.

    Another failed breeding attempt!! :(

Yeah, can't hurt to wait. I did read one helpful thing in Keeping Aliens, that putting them in different rooms for a while can help the male not be desensitized to the pheromones.

    Shelob's new lair

Nice. You'll have to find some tiny hobbits.

    Green Violin

    Very nice

    Yuck and yum

Yes, the thrill of the hunt! I figure if he doesn't get to go outside, I owe it to him to let him chase bugs.

    Color change!

I wish my mendica had turned more green. I kept a lot of green things in his cage, it has a green lid, even a green paper parasol and the occasional misting, but Tammy's are much more green than mine. Oh well.

    Color change!

Yeah, that's what I found interesting. I wonder if not getting enough unfiltered light affected their well-being. He said he did notice some color changes but then stopped updating as much (and no photos). So yeah.. I still rely on genetics over anything that hasn't been proven.

    Yuck and yum

I've gotten quite good at catching flies that get loose, and the ones I don't catch get caught and eaten by the cat. heh. You know, you could always just clean the guts up yourself..
