I think temperature and growth rate really make the impact on their size,outside of their genetic make up,the warmer it is as long as its not beyond what they can tolerate the more rapidly they eat and molt,and there is less time in between,so less time for them to store food and stretch...

Have you tried mini mealworms the nice small ones,packed in freezer sections usually they thaw right out and if small enough they will go after them,just watch putting them in containers with towel or substrate tho as they will get lost and not eaten
