    Water for fruit fly media?

No, The ideal mold environment is 32°-104°F, pH 3 to 8. (c.f, for example, http://cool.conservation-us.org/byorg/abbey/an/an23/an23-4/an23-402.html. ). Since pH is the inverse log of hydrogen ion concentration, mold will thrive in water between melting to over 100F that contains 1/10 the...

I was forced to change my profile picture!

No they're not joke cigars, Nick! They're the real thing, maiden's thigh and all (actually, I see that they have recently changed "maiden" to "young girl") and i'm still considering taking you up on your offer of swapping them for, what was yr term, "recreational drugs"? :D  :online2long:

Not your day, Mantiskid! So far as I know, it is also a no-no to reveal the contents of a p.m. in a post! !D

    Hello from WV

Welcome! mantis keeping is a lot like painting or playing the tuba in that you can read all you like, but the sooner you plunge in and start doing it, the better!

    Water for fruit fly media?

Yeah, I think that folks who say they use distilled/filtered water for their own peace of mind are in an unassailable position. In addition to any scientific considerations, though, I am a foreigner, and most of us have never been able to understand the American enthusiasm for paying for water...

way off topic on this one!

Oh yeah! I can do this! My turn! My turn! This is a bit like "what is yr favorite mantis?" but I am going to go with Dionne Warwick, but which song? "Say a little prayer" is a brilliant piece of musicianship and I have never heard anyone come close to covering it, but I know the West Coast (SF...

    Tell congress to vote no

Like the rest of you, i'm delighted that the bills did not pass, but I am old and bitter and cynical and I see this as a defeat for an old power base consisting of the movie and record industries and their lobbyists and major websites that were at risk of being closed under the new laws. It was...

how to hatch and feed Flies the easy way

Not at all, my friend, and at least I know that when I discuss something with you, I won't be on the wrong end of some strange curse or malediction! Interesting point about pollen in the honey. There should be, but there often isn't. Some beekeepers see this as another conspiracy by China to...

how to hatch and feed Flies the easy way

@Angelofdeath: "I feel strongly that gut loading the flies before feeding them to your mantis is very important, I know some will hatch the flies in the enclosure with the mantis, which ends up being poor nutrition for them. That's great, Nick. I feel that "gut loading" tritrophic feeders is a...

    Water for fruit fly media?

I found this on the CDC website: "Ensuring safe and healthy drinking water may be as simple as turning on the tap from an EPA-regulated public water system." Unless I'm misunderstanding you, Nick, it would seem that if you are right, CDC must be wrong. Is that true? I have not had any...

    Tell congress to vote no

Hi, Paul. I took care of this on a link from Wikipedia, but yours didn't work for me. Could you tell us what you consider to be the "harmful regulations" that would be imposed by these bills? Sunny and I worked out an ominous SOPA scenario on our way back from Walmart, but I would like to hear...

    SOPA

If you agree with the Wiki pprotest, you might want to go one step further and complain to yr senator or congressman. The site tells you how. Go for it!

Slowing the growth of a male Orchid Mantis

There's a lot of seriously wrong stuff in this thread, but your idea about the dangers of crossbreeding different strains of the same species, Gripen, is the most egregiously mistaken, since it contradicts the Biological Species Concept. Now, that concept may be mistaken, but it should at least...

Lets see the face behind the username!

Hey young Alex! It's been a cuppla years since we last saw one of you! Rather messy as I remember. :) , so post a new one of you, preferably with yr kid sister. I'd post another one of me, but after 70, you don't change much so long as you trim your ear hairs. Also, I only post pix of myself...

Is Acanthops parafalcata a sub-species of Acanthops falcata?

No. The scientific name is a binomial and a subspecies is signified by a trinomial (cf). Cladistically, though, Acanthops parafalcata is said to be in the "falcata group": http://tolweb.org/Acanthops/12639 All this may sound complicated at first, but you'll slide into it! :D And remember:
