    Very happily surprised!

So cute! :) I've had an ornate (possibly Western; our vet's not even 100% sure) box turtle since I was 3 (I'm 18 now. :3) She's a free-roamer in our house and even brumates herself. :P Congrats on the bebies! What species are they though? :o

    Auto-defense?

Well, she eats them... But it seems like everything I offer her triggers the defensive response. She was eating the same size prey items as a subadult... I was really just wondering if anyone else has a frisky mantis like this. lol

    Auto-defense?

I have one adult female chinese who will never attack her food normally. She always rears into a full defensive posture and strikes at it, almost like she's out for blood! Anyone else got a mantid like this?

    communal insect ideas

As far as invert combos that could work... B. dubia and B. fumigata are cockroaches that don't seem to mind other species. Mix in some pillbugs, mealworms, flour beetles, and larder beetles, and you'll have a pretty neat setup going. :) All of these can be kept on a bedding of bran/flour...

    Hold your breaths, Saturniid keepers!

The only problem I can see is that the nymphs don't do well with the leaves. :/ I dehydrated them in the oven and then pulverized them and strained out the powder. Right now the recipe looks like this: 1 tablespoon dehydrated sweetgum leaves 1 tablespoon gelatin mix (unflavored) 2...

    Hold your breaths, Saturniid keepers!

I'm doing some experiments today with pre-made food using sweetgum leaves. If my recipes work, then others working with these pillars can raise them without having to run and get leaves for them! Wish me luck! :D
