    Bent back leg(s)?

Two of my Chinese mantids have slightly bent tibias on their rear legs. It seems like it's the right side on each. (they're bowed out.) What caused this? Is it a problem? They're moving around just fine...

    HOMG!!! BABY SHIELDS!!!

Good thing I've got flies out the wazoo. :P Only a few have eaten their first meals; All seem healthy and very curious.

    roach food

Your staple diet should be a mix of high-protein cat/dog food, chicken feed, parrot food (slightly expensive option) or trout chow. Your supplements should be fruit and veggies (Yes, those decaying bananas you forgot in the back of the fridge will work!), and depending on the species, meat or fish.

    Pretty ironic huh?

They ARE rather small to be sitting out in the open and hunting prey. I don't think I've ever seen a Chinese mantid out and about around here until about L4.

    HOMG!!! BABY SHIELDS!!!

Looks like they're done; I've been doing the painstaking process of putting them each in their own deli cups! Looks like no cannibalism as of right now; Phew...

    Pretty ironic huh?

**OR, maybe all the shelter from the plants gave them more closure and less stress level? I did find a few newly hatched nymphs under some dying spring foliage today...

    Pretty ironic huh?

Personally, I think they may require higher ventilation and oxygen levels, seeing as whenever I kept them in 5th grade I went nuts with screening and live plants.

    Petco

I've never seen a good-producing culture at Petco or Petsmart. I'd find it easier, cheaper, and more worth-while to buy one off the net from an established breeder.

    Pretty ironic huh?

Contrary to what others on here have experienced, when my Chinese mantid ooths hatch I have a hard time feeding all the nymphs! I once had 3 ooths hatch at once (when I was in 5th grade; Now I'm in 12th) and so many lived to L2 that we had to start freezing them so I wouldn't be overwhelmed!

    HOMG!!! BABY SHIELDS!!!

Got another wave of around 40 last night; looks like they're still coming too!
  12. Z

    HOMG!!! BABY SHIELDS!!!

There are only about 15 of them... Should I be expecting a huge "wave" of them tomorrow?

    HOMG!!! BABY SHIELDS!!!

They just started hatching. When can I feed them? How big of a container should I be expecting to use?

    My bug room

Sheer excellence! My favorite part was, of course, the roaches. Lookin' good. :) Those crickets make me sick... :P

    Look Ma! One hand!

Has anyone else noticed that when their mantids go after prey they know they can overwhelm easily that they only use one arm? My L3 Chinese mantids are snagging big phorid flies left and right like this. I haven't observed them long enough to notice an arm preference yet.

    Eastern Swallowtail

I had the pleasure of finding one of these hanging from the woodpile in my backyard. It's been windy today, and it was barely hanging on, so I brought it inside until its wings harden. I may have actually seen it as a caterpillar hanging out near my carrots... lol
