Thanks. That was informative. You get your starting batches from Ghann's right? I think part of my problem is starting with Petco/PetSmart stock. My container is about the same size. About 60 quarts? I'm only using one though, with just one size of crickets.

You mean for the sling? Thanks. I think I can improvise for the time being. He's growing fast and I've seen him take down some fairly large juvenile crickets already. Do you have any Nauphoeta cinerea to spare?

    Good point. YouTube amateurs!

I've been buying pet shop crickets for my tarantulas, since my roach colonies are not mature yet. I bought 30 adult crickets at Petco, and they seem to die off at the rate of about 3-5 per day. That's a problem for my mature tarantula, but I just had an idea for my spiderling. The little guy...

That "let's try to save it's life" caption is wishful thinking. I find it hard to believe the a mantis will recover from having all that inside.

I spent the morning removing the electronics from an old upright freezer. I also cut some ventilation holes in the door. I plan on installing heat tape inside the freezer, and making it my new invertebrate microclimate. My space heater approach leaves a bit to be desired. For one thing, I...

    pack hunters??

I hear assassin bugs (Platymeris biguttatus) sometimes fight over food. They're definitely on my 'critters-to-have' list.

Ok we need to fix this...

Hey Orin, at 13, I was more into pinning things in a frame than actually rearing them. Eventually, I saw the light.

Rip Bigsby the female Ghost mantis

There's a reason that oothecas have 30-300 eggs. Most of those nymphs probably get picked off pretty early on.

I wonder if captivity allows them to live longer than would otherwise be the case. No predators for one thing.

    pack hunters??

They smell blood. It's a feeding frenzy.

Congratulations! I've got a bit of renewed faith in my Shelfordella lateralis colony. I just removed 4 oothecas from the enclosure. Google suggests that the oothecas should be kept relatively humid, so I put them in a separate enclosure. With some luck, in 20 days, I'll have nymphs.

Is there anything to pay attention to when raising the Hymenopus coronatus ?

On my PetSmart crickets, I tried slices of apple, orange, and carrot. I also sprinkled a few Kibbles 'n Bits in there. Of course, if your buying a sickly batch to begin with, no amount of invertebrate 'nursing' will save them. The crickets you order online might be healthier, but I have...

Is there anything to pay attention to when raising the Hymenopus coronatus ?

I want to give my newly purchased feeder roaches plenty of time to get established. In the meantime, I wanted something to feed to my newly purchased tarantulas. I bought about 100 crickets from PetSmart. I think they were banded crickets because they never made a sound. Between feeding them...

So much for that theory. People speculate about the causes, but of course, nobody knows for sure.

Peter Clausen sometimes refers to the proverbial "brown goo of death" that gets discussed in connection with cricket fed mantises. Primarily crickets that were raised on carrots.
