My mantis seems to be afraid of his food?

It doesn't appear to be. His balance looks to be a bit off but other than that he's fine. I took out all of the branches in his enclosure so he would get caught in them again. I put in a piece of tulle and glued it to the side and the top. He seems to like it.

My mantis seems to be afraid of his food?

His last Molt was April 26. When my husband and I were going to bed, we noticed he had slipped and had gotten caught in the small branch I put in his enclosure to climb on. We assumed that he would be able to climb out on his own because he didn't look like he was trapped. When we woke up he had...

My mantis seems to be afraid of his food?

No, my friend sexed him before he molted I am guessing he was just lucky. And I am not sure he had a diapause. I'm in Southern California and the lowest it's been during the day is low 60's while the evening lows are usually in the mid 50's. How does skipping a diapause effect a mantis?

My mantis seems to be afraid of his food?

From what I understand, my friend found the ooth and hatched it. He pretty much raised them until they started eating crickets then he started to give them away. I don't know if that tells you anything. What confuses me about it all is that he's been keeping mantids for a long time but he knows...

My mantis seems to be afraid of his food?

I have the feeling he doesn't like it. When I do spray him, and I make sure to do it lightly, he scurries away from me. I swear if he could, he'd probably shake a fist at me. It's kind of funny. But here's the picture. But I just noticed that the tip curls strangely. Is that supposed to happen...

My mantis seems to be afraid of his food?

What species and instar is your mantis? I believe we figured out that he is a Bordered Mantis (Stagmomantis limbata). As for his instar, I don't know but I am guessing he is at least L4. My friend who gave him to me didn't keep track of how often his mantids molt. How often do you usually feed...

My mantis seems to be afraid of his food?

I hope that's what it is, but I would be surprised. He only molted a couple of weeks ago, give or take, April 27th. But I have noticed that he tries to scramble to higher ground when he can. My husband likes to handle him and lately he's been very active trying to get to his shoulder. And I...

My mantis seems to be afraid of his food?

Yesterday I put in a cricket and he freaked out! He wasn't trying to take it down but he was trying to get away from it. He was scrambling so much that he fell off of the wall. I took the cricket out and put him back in his enclosure. I tried it again today and he did the same thing. Why is he...

I didn't realize my mantis was about to molt!

I offered a cricket to Bruno, (his new name), and he grabbed at it but it got away. He did it three times and then just totally ignored it. I guess he was just playing with it or something. Either way he appears to be able to grab at his prey and he wasn't hungry. I'll try again tomorrow.

I didn't realize my mantis was about to molt!

Thank you so much! It gets so confusing because the friend who gave him to me has been keeping mantids for along time but he never really did any research about them. He told me to go ahead and keep feeding him but I don't really want to leave them in there with him if I can help it.

I didn't realize my mantis was about to molt!

I tried that and he backed away from the tweezers. I'll try again tomorrow. How often should I feed him?

I didn't realize my mantis was about to molt!

I tried hand feeding and I scared him. He is catching the crickets okay but i am thinking of switching over to roaches. I worry too much that the crickets will hurt him. And how do I know when he is full? I'm looking at his abdomen but it doesn't look that much different. I notice that it did...

I didn't realize my mantis was about to molt!

Hello Ocelotbren! He seems to be doing okay. He ate for the first time last night, (he molted on Friday). But I am concerned that he's not eating as much as I think he should be, he's only eaten a small cricket. I put him and a cricket in a smaller cup but he doesn't appear to be all that...

I didn't realize my mantis was about to molt!

Five days? Thank you so much, I was getting worried about him. So I don't have to worry about putting food in there right now.Cool! I feel so bad. I totally thought he was a female because when I counted before his molt I counted six segments. I tried to double check but I couldn't see past his...

I didn't realize my mantis was about to molt!

Male? Before the molt I was able to count six segments on the abdomen, that's why I thought it was a 'she'. Did I do it too early? And when is a good time to try to feed him? I tried earlier and he doesn't seem interested yet

I didn't realize my mantis was about to molt!

Her wings look short to me and I don't see any red. I'm a little worried because her wings look a bit ragged, but I am sure it's because she was caught in the branch. I tried tong feeding her a cricket but she backed away so I dropped it in her enclosure. I am hoping she will see it and go after...

I didn't realize my mantis was about to molt!

Thanks MantisGirl13! Her front legs look okay, but her back legs worry me. One is bent out of shape and the other she has been holding straight. Her wings look crumpled now and I am assuming she is dried completely by now. I put in a cricket but I think I'll switch her over to cockroaches once...

I didn't realize my mantis was about to molt!

When I woke up this morning, she had molted! I'm kind of freaking out because she was really low on her branch when it happened so she's a bit bent. There is a bend in her thorax and in some of her wings and I just realized one of her legs is bent and she can't use it. Will she be okay? Is there...
