Help! Adopted Stagmomantis Limbata with swollen belly and dark spot in the right eye

I claim no expertise and it is likely that something rotting or ? in the enclosure is the source of the odor BUT is it possible the "smell" noticed is the female giving off pheromones to attract a male? and in enough of a concentration to be noticed by humans? Inside an enclosure the pheromones...

    Stagmomantis limbata (?)

She laid an Ooth ! Interestingly, one rear leg was dried into the Ooth and I had to pull it out. (not shown in pics) * I know this is "old hat" for many of you folks but this one is mine ha, ha.

    Stagmomantis limbata (?)

Things are moving fast since this morning ! After reading Rick's sticky on mating mantids I used my bathroom, with it's screened window for space, to mate the larger male to her. Presto, within seconds, Rick's advice worked like a charm ! She now has a honey bee to keep her occupied.

    Stagmomantis limbata (?)

She attracted 2 males last night ! Yeah ! ha, ha ! if she eats one I still have another Yikes ! This is the larger male, greenish, hard to tell in the pic but as long as her, if not possibly longer. (Both males are very active, crawling and flying around so, hard to get closer and clearer...

    Stagmomantis limbata (?)

No luck with her calling yet (as far as I can tell.) About 5 weeks since adulthood. The caresheet says about 3 weeks into adulthood and they are ready to mate. (I assume mantids will mate if placed together but the female won't necessarily exhibit obvious calling behavior to attract a mate? I...

    Nymph care after shipping?

I'll hold at the post office in the future. Of course, it's risky with high temps this time of year so, I shouldn't be surprised. Do many of you use overnight? Good results with that? All the mantids in the past wanted to eat so I've fed them. Offering water I have not done because they all ate...

    Nymph care after shipping?

Thank you for the advice and suggestions. Well, I do live in Los Angeles... but the S. Limbata I found and keeping inside is doing fine for a couple of months now so, I don't think it's my environment. I don't doubt the shipping is very stressful for the little guys. So far the ghost that...

    Nymph care after shipping?

I'm new to this hobby. After people receive a nymph in the mail exactly what do you do to take care of them afterward? I seem to kill them ; ( Leave them alone for 1, 2 or more days? Feed and leave alone? Don't feed? I was immediately feeding then leaving alone for a couple of days before...

"Ecology Male Oligonicella scudderi are sometimes caught in black light traps at night, and have been seen feeding on small flies, caddis flies and wasps. ... When disturbed they tend to hide in tussocks of little bluestem grass (Schizachyrium scoparium) where their colouration makes them...

    Hello from Switzerland :)

Welcome Michelle, Cool green alien you have there. Just curious, how did you get your mantids in Zurich? Pet shop? Friends? EU? Bug fest? Are any mantids indigenous to Switzerland?

    Mantis id needed and gender

Nice mantis and a large one too! I'm a noob but I'll take the ID test: Most likely a Chinese Mantis due to their abundance in the Eastern half of the USA. (such as Long Island, NY) Tenodera sinensis (Chinese Mantis) http://mantidforum.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=31349 Six abdomen...

    Oligonicella scudderi

Let her do all the work finding a male? You could place her outside when she's calling and wait for males to show up? I especially like the shorter antennae and the camouflage coloring next to the twigs. Thanks for the pics.

    Stagmomantis limbata (?)

She's incredible! Look at her stand up compared to the previous pics. What a difference a couple of days makes. I'm more confident she'll not only survive but thrive and mate. She now uses all 4 (bent and curved) rear legs to stand and hang upside down again. She's not the perfect...
