    Sunlight

Is it actually dangerous to place mantis eggs in direct sunlight? I got an ootheca from Insect Lore from my mom for my birthday recently and the instructions had this warning in it: Do not place egg in direct sunlight. Is that actually dangerous for the eggs? It's way warmer outside than inside...

    Water

But there is no mold. I guess  I mean. . . is it unsafe to spray the eggs directly? or should the water never actually touch them? I've been spraying them consistently without gaps longer than 2-3 days for months and no mold has grown.

    Water

I should probably have asked this much earlier, but . . . is it possible to get mantis eggs too moist, short of submerging them and assuming mold isn't growing on them?

    Okay.

    Feeding Amounts

I was using the ants we've had invading our kitchen for years now. We don't have any ant poison down (it was supremely ineffective when we did). I'd be more concerned about the moths in that regard. . . This year though I can probably just start feeding them mealworms once they're big enough for...

    Feeding Amounts

Well, with the nymphs, kind of whatever's handy. . . I've tried using red spider mites and aphids for the smallest ones (they seemed scared of the aphids) and moths and ants for the older ones. I'm guessing if anything on that list is likely to be a problem, it's the ants?

    Feeding Amounts

I was feeding the adults mealworms back when I had adults and will resume doing so once I have adults again. I used all sorts of stuff for nymph food. Thanks for the advice!

    Feeding Amounts

Last year, I put up some questions about some health problems one of my mantises was having, and the answers I got led me to believe that I made some wildly off base assumptions when I initially determined how much to feed my pets. I assumed in 2017 that mantises probably needed to eat about...

    OLD Jokes

I really wish I'd gotten the P in pray to not be capitalized. Likewise, I would like to know why on earth I don't have a picture of my pets just in prayer pose.  As a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, I'm theoretically supposed to pray roughly five times a day (morning...

    That third one's eyes look like Roz's , you know from Monster's Inc. . . It's hilarious :)

    can different mantis species mate?

Neat. . . I've always wondered about this.  I mean, of course I'm not likely to try it.

    YES, FINALLY

One of the several mantis eggs I've had on my bookshelf for weeks hatched/started hatching last night. It is normal for them to hatch over time with a few babies emerging at a time, right? That's what it's been doing.

How long exactly do European eggs take to hatch?

    One of them just hatched.

How long exactly do European eggs take to hatch?

@MrGhostMantis They're at the same temperature as the rest of the room. The thermostat in the room is set for 70 degrees Fahrenheit. Is that not warm enough?

How long exactly do European eggs take to hatch?

I'm asking because I have four eggs that have been just sitting on the bookshelf for more than a month now. I pulled them out of the fridge in mid November. Two of them I didn't expect to hatch anyway, but the two I was actually hopeful about show no obvious signs of life either. I don't think I...

Mental Health Questions/Quality of Life Issues

That was probably true a couple days ago. . . their appetites dropped off a lot about 14 days back though.

Mental Health Questions/Quality of Life Issues

Okay. . . I'll see if I can find some flies before they die of old age. . . neither of them can actually climb anymore.

Mental Health Questions/Quality of Life Issues

I still have two wild-caught mantises who are both alive and don't seem to be in a big hurry to die. I'm kind of worried about the fact that their lives have been reduced to little more than eating and sleeping - they don't even get to hunt anymore. (Unless there is a way to tempt them to try...
